Alternate route to avoid I-95 NJ to FL

I am looking for an alternate way to go to NJ to Fl to avoid the congestion from NJ or Delaware to Richmond VA or North Carolina. Traveling in a motor home so height restrictions & avoiding tunnels are an issue.

Depending on where you are starting from in NJ, I-81 may be way out of your way. DE-1 will take you from I-95 near New Castle, DE to US-113 which has less traffic than US-13 avoiding most of Dover and Salisbury and joins US-13 near the MD/VA border.

US-17 South from Norfolk/Virginia Beach to just North of the Georgia border is a good road with lots of 4 lane sections and bypasses around most of the congested areas, even most of Myrtle Beach.

Another possible route from NJ would be the Cape May Lewis Ferry, then US-9 South to DE-1 South to DE-24 West to US-113 South to US-13 to the CBBT. If you use the Ferry, check the toll rates. It may pay to disconnect the toad. Rates are based on vehicle length and passengers are charged a fee. So the two vehicles each with a driver(included in the vehicle toll) may save a little.
Safe travels!

After having traveled from NY to FL for the last ten years, I have found the best route is I-81S to I-77, thru Charlotte to I-26S to I-95S. Charlotte is easy to go thru, and as was mentioned take the east 295 around Jacksonvlle.

CBBT Bridge part is fine but be aware that in the Tunnel part it is two lanes with trafic comming at you. Not too long but not much room for error.

You want to avoid the western 295. It's worse than going thru town. I would do the eastern bypass. Very scenic.

No help here until you get to Jacksonville. Jacksonville has a 295 around so no problem there.

Cross over the Delaware Memorial Bridge and follow signs for Dover. Get onto Rt 1 South (toll road) which is a very nice road. South of Dover, get onto Rt13 South all the way to Virginia. Take the Chesapeake Bay Bridge Tunnel which has a 13'6" clearance. From there get onto Rt 13 South to Rt 64 East where you can pick up Rt 17 South to avoid Rt 95 OR take Rt 58 West to get back onto Rt 95 South at Emporia Virginia.

The CBBT is a great ride and many Motor homes and big trucks use it. Just turn off your propane ahead of time.

X2. This is the way we always go. Nice drive and CBBT is a fun way to go. Just turn off your propane.

X2 for the 81S, 77S, 26S route. I'd take 26S to 95S, Jacksonville isn't so bad, depending on the time of day you go through there.

We live in Florida and have been to Maine several times. We stay off of I-95 after one trip. I would suggest getting over to 81S to I-77S to I-26S to US 301S to I-75. You could stay on 26 to I-95 but then you would go thru Jax which is not as bad as it used to be. I dont know where you are going in FL.
