Highway 95..........Nevada

So has anyone taken it? Once again we are making the trek to Oregon to visit the grandkids, and we are looking for a road that we haven't traveled. We thought about the 1/101 route, but with the "lets get all we can" attitude that the oil companies have here in Cali, we are not gunna pay $4.50+ a gallon for fuel. So we will head out of Cali ASAP.

Started planning our route and saw the 95. Its a short trip to Baker and then a left. We went the 395 last year and planned to go the 95 to get back home, but there was some fires and we ended up going back down the 395. Looks like it would be a nice sightseeing run.

What do you think?

Hey Chuck we just came down the 101 from Portland area over the last couple of weeks. Gas buddy is your friend, gassed up at Pilot in Salinas for $3.57 and $3.77 in Ukiah. Once north of the Cali border price CAN drop have to pay attention. Was MUCH cooler above Ukiah than even near the bay!

Unfortunately whatever savings might have happened would have been ate up by the longer miles that would have been done to go the coast. I found a route that was under 1000 miles and I have to run premium for now..........working on getting Red to take regular.

I see lots of Oregon plates on rv's rolling thru Fallon every spring and fall. Nevadas gas prices on the 95 are not much cheaper then California's on 395 thru Mohave, lone pine, independence, big pine or bishop just to warn you. We make the trip from fallon to Ventura county about five times a year. Once you hit mammoth lakes thru Bridgeport then prices sky rocket on the 395.

Are you towing anything? If so the the 95 would be better as your not stuck with the 55 mph towing limit in Cali.

I like taking the 95. Lots of cool old mining towns.

Profile foto was taken at Walker Lake near Hawthorne, about the only prosperous town on the route. We encountered little traffic from north of Vegas. There are a number of hmmm, shall we say, houses of ill repute along the way. We saw a wild burro but not much else. Easy drive with little traffic. We passed through in early November so encountered some snowbirds in large RVs heading south.

Also, watch out for wildlife. I nearly took out the biggest buck antelope I have ever seen just north of Shurtz a few weeks ago.....

Last June we took 95 from Vegas up to Reno then on to Redding/ Mt. Shasta to I 5 to Roseburg then over to the coast (101) enroute to a FMCA rally at Coos bay. Hot ( especially with a dead AC in the MH) but a great ride anyway.

I travel from home to our son's home in Vegas. Beware of speed traps in all the little towns along 95. Especially Shurz and goldfield though. Easy drive but not to exciting.

We have traveled the 95 on many occasions between Las Vegas and Reno, there is quite a bit of history along the route but keep in mind that most of it is desert and not much to see but the road is good and you can travel at your own pace. If you go that route keep your eye's open for Buford T. Justice in the town of Goldfield as He like to cite those that go over the speed limit. Never been cited but He does appears out of nowhere.

Piece of cake and it's one of my favorite trips. I drive from Oregon to Vegas at least 6 times a year. Everytime I take 395 I regret it, Callifornia is way too expensive, too much traffic for me, the campgrounds have an inflated opinion of themselves. 95 is the way to go. Lots of curious things along the way. I won 800 bucks at El Capitan in Hawthorne last trip, (plus free camping). It doesn't get any better than that.
