NJ turnpike tolls

I could not believe how much tolls were traveling from jersey city (liberty state park) straight down the turnpike into Delaware and beyond. I think we paid about $50 on the turnpike. I have not been up in that area for about 12 years, they are just completing a huge road project.. I guess they need their $$$

Note to self.... Have a lot more cash for tolls in the truck next time we take a big trip! Had to pull off the road to reload from the trailer!

We have EZ Pass and still leave the NJ Pike heading south at Exit 5. Head west for less than a mile and pick up Rte 295 S which parallels the NJ Pike down to the Delaware Bridge. It's free, has less traffic, and runs through rural countryside. Heading north, look for Rte 295 and do the reverse, getting on the Pike. Camp on!

NJ tolls may be high but the gas is the cheapest in the country.

You could also use Rt 295 instead of the turnpike, I think you can jump over to it starting around exit 7, that will save some money and 295 runs parallel to the turnpike, just more exits to deal with.

Great suggestion -- also avoids you paying tolls at the end with the traffic back up, then we head down the Eastern shore of Maryland and cross the Bay Bridge which is free going south-west.

RT95 tolls are out of control...$75 in tolls from top of NJ to DC for motorhome towing car. I would not mind paying it I was not sitting in traffic each time. It is so worth taking RT81 instead.....plus not having to deal with traffic in those states.

Tolls are too high for family camping runs, round trip LI, NY through NJ Turnpike. GW Bridge was $34, T-Neck Bridge was $30 and the NJTP was $116.80 for my DRW pickup.

Ofcourse I planned ahead, ( just didn't have enough cash in the truck, can't think of everything with 2 kids, 3,200 miles in just 2 weeks! ) I wanted the most direct route and the route I knew the best. I didn't really care as we most likely will not be up there again any time soon. I was just shocked at the cost. We had a fairly loose budget being our 1 big trip for the year, lots of saving, so $50 was not a concern to try and change routes.

I do have a florida EZ pass, and was planning on using it until the first toll both came and I asked them and they said " we use most EZ passes, except Florida" great, thanks, I replied...

Anyway, this was more of an fyi just in case someone else who does travel these roads often like us wanted to know... Bring cash!

Cost us $21.30 in a class B yesterday traveling from Liberty Harbor down to Cherry Hill to spend the weekend in DC area. The road was mostly in good condition and traffic was very light all morning.

We skipped the metro regions/tolls by traveling further west when headed to/from Atlantic Canada, so experienced a touch of sticker shock.

I guess sometime we'll get around to getting an EZ pass, but this was the first time we've ever needed it in 40,000+ miles. Wish they'd merge with Florida's Sun Pass, because we use that every year.

They tried but Florida would not go along.
By the way it cost you about $3.50 extra to not use the EZ-PASS.
If you had planned ahead you could have taken the less expensive route and paid a lot less in tolls. You chose not to plan and so you pay the price.
My GPS asks if I want to avoid toll roads. Does your?
