Roll Call Alaska 2016

I have been planning this trip for 4+ years. It is now time to update my estimates and make my reservations.

Estimate Wash/BC border about 5 May 2016, north on route 97/1/2 to Tok, south to Valdez, make the hump to Anchorage, then to Homer and Seward, north to Denali, Fairbanks, back to TOK and off to Dawson, then south to Watson Lake, Smithers, then to CAN 16 east to Jasper,/Banff, on to Glacier in Montana, arriving early Sept so I can get thru the park then west to Kalispell. South thru the US to Houston area for the thanksgiving holiday and Florida for the Christmas holiday. Since I am sure it will be cold in Ohio I wont return home till April 2017.

Alaska here we come!!!!

G George

On edit, yup it's time to plan 2016. I edited your post to modify the title to be consistent with previous years; it will facilitate future searches for members.

If you are "fast approaching" it may be to late to get into a NP campground. We stayed at Cantwell this time and found it to be very nice. We chose it because we wanted to explore more of the Denali Hwy with just our 4x4 truck. I agree that staying in the park gives you a better "feel". Do it if you can. lizzie

The RV parks are parking lots. I'd highly recommend you stay IN the park itself for the overall best experience. The ranger activities are great to participate. Definitely do the sled dog program. If you can, get a reservation for the Teklanika campground and purchase the TEK bus pass. You can ride the bus as often as you want during your stay and for how long you want. Just get off and catch the next bus going by. Even walking down the road a short distance after the bus leaves is an awesome experience of the vastness of the park and the absolute quiet. Riley Creek in the front part of the park is very nice. The park has a nice dump station facility with fresh water fill, and a laundry. Generators are allowed during certain hours.

If you are 62+ you should have a Senior Pass which will give you 1/2 off on the campsite.

We're leaving our home in Saskatchewan August 15, heading for Alaska. We've got 3 nights booked at northern Saskatchewan provincial parks, and for the rest, we'll meander. We'll get to the border at Beaver Creek/Alcan whenever we get there, late August. The Dawson route sounds nice, but might be a bit rougher than we want for our motorhome. We want to spend at least 2 weeks in Alaska, but we may extend that to 3. Depends...any time we spend there will mean less time south this winter. Coming back, we intend to head back down to Prince Rupert, B.C. and then wander back east from there. This is our first autumn as retirees. Also our first really long trip in the motorhome. We're really looking forward to it. 🙂

We're busy gathering information now. Hubby wants to learn how to fish. 🙂 I wouldn't mind trying it again, too. We both need to learn how to clean what we catch. 🙂

You could spend 3 of those weeks driving OR as I like to tell my friends: "You can certainly drive the speed limit - just bring enough money to buy a new rig." :B :B :B

The story of my life; RV's that pass in the night (or day). We always seem to be just arriving or just leaving from where some other forum member has been. I was driving and I usually wave, so I probably waved at you. lizzie

We must have passed you on the highway, Lizzie. We arrived at Trapper Creek heading north about an hour ago. You are right! The Mountain view is spectacular today!!

Just arrived in Talkeetna after a fabulous drive down the Parks Hwy from Cantwell. It is a clear, flawless day and The Mountain was visible for miles and miles and miles. Great photo ops! Yesterday we took the Denali Shuttle Bus to Kantishna. It was overcast with occasional light rain. Our driver assured us that animals are often very active on days that that. Wow, was she ever right! It was a peak day for wild life. We plan to leave Talkeetna on Friday or Saturday and spend a few days in Anchorage with old friends. No plans after that...just going with the flow. lizzie

We are finishing up a 4 day stay in Homer. Did lots of of sightseeing and boating, including a fishing trip today courtesy of fellow RV.net and truck camper friend, Hook, and his wife Bernie. We will be shipping home almost 40 lbs of halibut. We also went to Seldovia. If you are able to visit there, it is a neat little village. We had some good eagle watching while there. I thoroughly enjoyed our stay here. Having insights from Kenai peninsula locals certainly helped. I would love to come back here again. Tomorrow we head to Whittier so we can go through the Anderson tunnel. Then we head north towards Denali where my sister and brother-in-law are flying in to meet us for a few days. Our 5er is going to get even more crowded. 🙂
