anyone ever taken highway 20 exit 161, between blue canyon and cisco west to I 5?

You probably don't really want to do that. Take 80 into Sacto then north on I5 to 20 West at Williams, you will be better off.

I see no problem with this route at all. I drive it on a regular basis towing my trailer and not towing. Big rigs are on this route every time I use it.

Actually prefer that route...no problems and no going thru Sacto.

what ever route you choose, be sure and call "Cal Trans" to get road construction information before you make your final choice.

If you want to avoid all winding roads,

take I-80 to Hwy 37 at Vallejo and then to Hwy 101 North to Ukiah.

This is an alternative route, just sure you plan your trip so you avoid early morning or late afternoon from Sacramento to Vallejo. I-80 can be a real cluster of traffic when people go to work or head home after work. From Vallejo to Hw 101 is a 2 lane road with a lot of traffic but is no real big problem.
Hwy 20 is RV friendly if you just slow it down and enjoy the signts. Call the Indian casino in Clear Lake to see if they still allow you to stay overnight in their big parking lot for FREE:)

X2 for CA 20. Slow and easy gets it done. Use the marked turnouts if more than 5 vehicles behind you. Enjoy the trip along Clearlake which is full. If you need a break there is Robinson Rancheria Casino which has a large level parking lot.

We've driven hwy 20 from I-5 west with a 37ft motor home and toad... It's two lane in places ( around the lake it gets tight in stretches)but for the most part it was easy to do.

You don't have a lot of choices without additional miles added to the trip.
