Acadia Campground Help

Need some help with a campground selection for those that have been there. I'm in the beginning phases of planning a trip for next June to Acadia National Park. I have never been, so most of my campground selections are going off of internet searches and reviews. So far I really like Schoodic Woods Campground. Very spacious and private from what I can tell. Only problem so far, it looks like it is easily over an hours drive to Bar Harbor where we would like to eat out the 4 days we are there. Are there any other campgrounds in the area that are like Schoodic Woods? I do not mind not having full hook-ups but if I'm going to be camping on top of someone, I would prefer full hook-ups. Also, what are your favorite places to eat at while in the area? Thanks for the help.

We're 0 for 2 on KOA's. If we go back I'll probably try Desert.

All of the above mentioned CGs are great places - some with great costs, both financial and non-financial (limiting factors). Choosing a location is a balancing act between location, cost, hookups, scenery, availability, rules, site size, etc.

We landed at Smuggler's Den on the west-central portion of the island. Although I would have loved to see the sunsets from my site like you can at the KOA, I didn't want the $140+/night cost. I can see the sunset for free, then travel back to my site. I would have loved to be closer to BH (BH Campground), but the "no reservations" limitation didn't work with my schedule. I would have loved to be lost in nature (Acadia NP), but I travel with others who require electricity (no generator here), so that is not an option. I would have loved being away from it all (Schoodic) but our group enjoys being a bit closer to the action.

Bottom line, find your limitations, do your research like you are here, and pick the place that has the definites that you can and can't live without.

The Bar Harbor Campground was great. They don’t take reservations, but it’s a big place. Also don’t take credit cards, but I think they may take checks. They pass on the administrative savings - it’s less expensive than many others. Very close to BH, I think the closest available, and a very convenient free shuttle into town and the park leaves from in front. We had a cooked lobster dinner delivered to our site there.

We liked Schoodic Woods campground because all of the sites have electric and some have both electric and water.

Bar Harbor KOA, 20 minutes outside park, 30 outside town of Acadia. Pricey, gorgeous sunsets, lobster bakes and pancake breakfasts on site, lots of kids activities and the shuttle bus stops there.

We were in Acadia NP in late June and stayed at Blackwood. The campground was very clean and well maintained. It seems that no matter where you stay, you are a quite a ways from Bar Harbour. We ran into construction in and around Bar Harbour and also near the entrance to Acadia. None of the maps are worth much due to the detours not letting you know how to get to the park entrances because many roads on the maps don't have names on them.
The park itself was beautiful. We took the carriage tour and enjoyed it.

We stayed at Blackwood inside the park. Seemed to be fairly centrally located. Campground was quiet and sites were separated with nature.Blackwood
