We stayed in the NP Bayside campground loop C. IMO, the best site there. We had a tree for shade,we were about 100 ft from the bay and about 100 yards from fresh water and dump station. Go to all the ranger demonstrations. They are good. They even have a campfire on the beach.

Williamsburg was nice. We also enjoyed Jamestown. You can get the pass for those 2 plus Yorktown. We stayed across the river at Chippokes Plantation state park. There is a free ferry across the river which drops you off right at Jamestown. Nice Campground with water and electric.

Jamestown is a great visit
Captain George's good choice for dinner
Cookout nice place for a cheap lunch
Escape room in colonial Williamsburg is a blast
Witch trial is also a blast

Assateague used to have lots of wild life to see the Sitka deer are friendly and may let you pet them
The ponies will bite

The original poster didn't indicate whether he had reservations for Assateague State Park or the adjacent National Park, but if it's the State Park, the Maryland Senior Pass gives you half-price camping Sunday-Thursday, and is available to out-of-state residents, which is quite unusual. If you're eligible, you can sign up at the park when you check-in, and it'll pay for itself immediately if you're there for a non-weekend stay.

Two great places. I grew up in Maryland and went to both often as a kid.

We liked Assateague NP, but we were in the ocean side loop which I believe they moved across the road.

Along with the obvious Assateague draw of the wild horses, also check out the NASA facility at Wallops Island, with luck you may even catch a launch.
Williamsburg, is a great series of tours and also catch the Colonial Parkway to Yorktown, beautiful drive and the visitors center in Yorktown is often overlooked, and on the day you do that, go down to the riverfront in Yorktown and try lunch at the Yorktown Pub, they do a great crabcake sandwich.

Oh yeah, in Williamsburg try Captain Georges Seafood restaurant. Great Seafood buffet with the best crab stuffed mushrooms ever.

One real catch for Williamsburg if it's still the same as several years ago is that the re-inactments/Demonstrations and tours are not all daily with some only once or twice a week and not all on the same day. This means to see them all takes a week to 10 days to see them all.
