The DW and I are planning a trip to Washington, DC and NYC for next summer. I'm looking for the best parks located nearby. We'll be arriving mid-July. Thanks!

Actually, so does Cherry Hill. We've used her a couple of times, and while we've never actually met her, she leaves notes with updates, seems to love the dogs, who seem to be really happy there.

Another NYC option is Croton Point Park. Croton Point is a nice county park on the Hudson River. Full Hook ups in a state park setting.About 2 miles from rain station. Easy Drive to train station. About an hour train ride into Grand Central Station.

For NYC, I recommend Battlerow in Nassau County on L.I. It is much less expensive than Liberty and a beautiful little park with a suburban feel. However, my recommendation assumes you don't mind a commute on the LIRR into Penn Station.

Can you elaborate a little more about this process. I would LOVE to go to NYC again... but the $80/night, longer walk with a toddler and infant to the PATH and dogs requiring multiple trips back to the camper per day have put a damper on my plans.

I am not familiar with the LI railroad, cost, where it meets the subway system, length of commute to get to Manhattan, etc.

Any chance you could provide a little more detail?

Just left Pohick Bay Campground in Lorton, Va. Some others were booked and we were directed here. I guess all us snowbirds heading south are filling up the c.g. ??

Was $34 night for electric. Huge, tree shaded sites with picnic table and fire pit. Dump and water on your way out.
About 8 miles to Franconia-Springfield metro stop, lots of parking even on work day.
We will go back here!

We were there the end of May for a couple of weeks. The end of May, many of the stores underground were closed for JFKs birthday on May29th. But one store was closed for Jefferson Davis' birthday on June 3rd. DC is considered the south by some folks. ๐Ÿ™‚

I think it was JFK who said that DC is a city with Southern efficiency and Northern charm. But he was just kidding. (I lived there about 30 years and still love it.)

When I was still working, a colleague and I were sent to Washington, DC for a series of classes presented by IBM. The company put us up in Embassy Suites and there's one on each end of the mall. And each one had inside access to the metro. That's the only way to travel. Stay off of the surface streets. You're an amateur in a sea of pros. The Metro is clean, well lit, and patrolled. And there's an underground stop at the Smithsonian. Your kids will love it, and so will you.

When my wife and I "did" the Washington, DC and Baltimore sights, we stayed at the Capitol KOA in Millersville, MD. It was near our friends in Pasadena as well, making visiting convenient. A bit pricey, but overall not a bad CG for the money.

Are you talking about Bar Harbor? If so that would be a good hike to D.C. but from what I heard the view of the bay would be worth it just for that.

yep that's the one. If I was sightseeing in D.C. I would spend a night or so at cherry hill, then if I was moving NE I would hit Bar Harbor.

just remembered that IIRC Bar Harbor has some pull in spaces for motor homes so you can pull in and have a view of the bay out your windshield so might want to request one of those spots if applicable.

Several years ago, we stayed at Cherry Hill in DC. My wife and I were fine in the Roadtrek, but two kids we had with us who slept in a tent had a really tough time sleeping because the CG is really close to the Beltway. The noise from the 18-wheelers was intense. Having said that, Cherry Hill was convenient from a public transportation point of view. However, the next time we go to DC, we're going to try Greenbelt Park (for the price, and the ability to walk about a mile and a half or so to the Metro Station).

In August this year, we visited NYC and were pleasantly surprised with Liberty Harbor. It's not cheap ($80 for water and electricity), but it was convenient and safe to walk about five blocks to the Grove Street PATH station, and take the PATH train into Manhattan. Here's a photo of our last night, just before moving the Roadtrek to dump the tanks.

My suggestion for DC would be to camp up around Gettysburg (multiple nice CG's to choose from) and then just do a day trip down to to the city. If you want to do mass transit in close, just park at the Shady Grove station and take the Metro on in from there.

If you plan to do this, and commute, check out Point Lookout State Park south of Annapolis. We drove in from there this summer and caught the METRO at Suitland. It was about 1:30 drive to the station, then about 20 minutes to the Mall.

Point Lookout is on the spit of land where the Potomac River runs into the Chesapeake Bay. It is on the site of a Confederate War POW Camp/Prison and has lots of history along with 6 different campground loops that offer an assortment of facilities. Some have no services, a few have water/electric, and some are FHU. Some are on the water, some are in the woods, etc.

Don't be hating on my hood and I won't mention Harrisburg.

:B LOL

LOL! Yeah, maybe a little overboard, but I call'em like I see em. Where I come from, cows and silos are landmarks. My perception always gets skewed when I'm not allowed to possess my Constitutional protection. BTW, you can bang on Harrisburg all you like. I don't go there either. Drive past it every day, just don't go in unless I absolutely have to. They're in a race with York for most homicides this year.
