Campground Recommendation & Activities near Ashville, NC

We're still brainstorming our trip and I think we're going to have 2-3 days to spend near the Ashville or Boone NC area. We'd like something we can enjoy the outdoors but a site with at least electricity is necessary. We will spend several days in the Bryson City area, but want to check out the Ashville / Boone area as well. We will want to site see to the Biltmore, but possibly also to some outdoor hiking and such as well.

So I'm looking for a camping place somewhere near either city but in the mountains if possible. What are your favorite places to stay in that area?

What are your favorite things to go see?

We stayed at Taps CG, right in Asheville. It was Fall, we were touring, so not even sure what they had for a pool, etc. Price and location were right by us! ST

Do you have a dog? If so, don't miss Four Paws Kingdom. About an hour from Ashville and you and your dog will love it. Check out the website if you are interested. Tons of stuff to do.

Another vote for Lake Powhatan. Don't miss the NC Arboretum that's right next door. Pay to park but free admission.

Friends of ours go here to Mama Gertie's every year for their anniversary. They are there this weekend and they love it.

I have never been there, but have seen many pictures and they are beautiful with some magnificent mountain views. (They have a 40' fifth wheel). This weekend, he said they were in the new section with a deck that overhangs the mountain. These are 33-41.

This is about 15 minutes outside of Asheville.

When all else fails check out a good campground directory OR do a Google search for `Ashville campgrounds'. Then do a similar search for `Ashville tourism'.

Boone and Ashville are miles apart, if you want mountains go to Boone and stay at Flintlock campground. It is on a creek has full hookups and priced right. We have probably camped there 10-11 times.

Unfortunately most of the state parks in the area don't have hookups.
We liked Asheville East KOA in Swannanoa NC just outside Asheville. The link above shows lots of hiking and biking trails in the area.

Mama Gerties is a neat campground but the road was steep for us seniors!

Campfire Lodgings is another nice campground on top of a mountain.
