We are heading south on I44, and planning an overnight stay near St Roberts MO. Our son is currently stationed at FT Leonard Wood. Would appreciate any suggestions on where best to stay with our 5th wheel. After a quick visit we are continuing on down to the RGV area of Texas. Thanks in advance.

Country Hearth Inn just off I-44 exit 163 on south side of highway has about a dozen sites behind the motel. We've used it for overnight stops in the past, nothing fancy but it does the trick.

Thanks for the tip. According to information on the web, it looks like the new name is the Magnuson Hotel and RV Park. I called them and was told they do take reservations for the RV pads, I may be calling them back to book a site. Thanks to everyone who responded. FYI, my son is atending the Sapper Leadership Course that finishes on 30 Oct 15. Sure hope we can see him on our way through.....

It would be about an hour's drive but Bennett Spring State Park, northwest of Lebanon, has a really nice campground. I think they take reservations. We stayed there a couple of years ago on our way to the Hill Country. Hope this helps.

If your son is stationed there, have him ask if the base campground is available to family members: Piney River

Be sure to check with the base... Sometimes they are setup for visiting family and friend...

Montauk is a nice park but those trout streams can get pretty crowded on the weekends. I'd check into that WMR campground but keep in mind they close for the season in a few weeks. If you son is in basic training and you don't have a military ID, that may present a problem in reserving a spot but it never hurts to call and ask.

When I was young back in the 50's I use to hitchhike from Bonnie Illinois to Waynesville MO to visit with my sister and her hubby that was stationed there.. Bet it hasn't change one bit since then haha...

Certainly was not a I44 there back then...

Montauk State Park is somewhat close, but it will still be a drive! It is a nice park with a trout stream.

I'm mapping out our route south, so I had my stuff out so I thought I would take a fast look for you. From what I can tell you got real slim pickings in that area. The reviews of the few private campgrounds in the vicinity were all very poor and down right concerning. No casino's, state parks, or city/county parks to choose from.

There is a Wal-Mart and Cracker Barrel in St. Robert right off of I44. Might not be the preferred places, but could be worth a call to see if overnighting is allowed. Appears to be ez on/off and for one night might be OK. You could always drive thru them, and if not acceptable keep heading down the road.

ON EDIT:

Glad now I took some time out for your post. Turns out I'm having the exact same problem on my route in one spot and forgot all about Cracker Barrel. Seems to be my best choice for my problem.

For you the one I'm talking about is (from their website):
