I just heard that this will affect National Parks, among a lot of other things. My brother and SIL just left yesterday for a week at the Grand Canyon.

BBC story on the coming government shutdown

*edited to add second link, directly to the shutdown story*

BBC is just as slanted as the rest of them and certainly has views which are apparent.

The politicians have made this mess repeatedly and I vote to let them all fall on their faces to show their true colors and what they are really made of. The fact is, it takes two to tango and no matter where you stand both parties are responsible. The entire government is without backbone and until the public takes notice and demands more from their leaders, maybe a shutdown will be necessary.

Still plenty of private campgrounds open to be patronized.

Almost certainly. The contractor requires payment, if that payment if part of the Budget.....

Exactly. Just like the other 3 threads on this subject.

During the shutdown when Clinton was President we lived adjacent to Rocky Mountain National Park. All roads were barricaded with notice of arrest for entering the Park. All trails including one near our house were barricaded or had ribbon across them with the same warning notices. There were a few law enforcement rangers on duty. Don't think I would want to chance trying to sneak into the Grand Canyon or any other National Park.

All of this bantering about a shutdown is just another dog & pony show. There will be a late night, back room deal at the eleventh hour, photo ops with their sleeves rolled up so the voters will think Congress worked hard through the night for us, and everything will go on.

Second scenario... The affected Government employees will go home for a vacation. When they go back to work, their pay will be retroactive, they will be paid for work not done(which may be a blessing in disguise) and everything will go on.

COE stands for Army Corps of Engineers, which is a government entity. Yes, they will be closing Monday if there is a government shutdown. My husband and I are volunteering at the Corps in Branson, MO, (workamping) and we were told not to report to work Monday if there's a shutdown because nobody will be there!

We head out on Wednesday AM to a USFS CG and if it is closed we have lots of boondocking places to camp,we also have State and County CGs
We don't make reservations, if it's closed or full we always go boondocking.

We were ATVing this weekend and bumped into three Forest Service law enforcement rangers who were checking for permits. We asked them is BLM, Forest Service and National Monument lands would be affected. They said that if there is an entrance station, it would be closed. All offices and information centers also closed.

So, if the COE campground has an entrance station with COE employees, it will be closed.

We have decided that if things close down, we will stay in a private campground in Escalante, UT and hike the National Monument.

I'm sure you are correct but the website says it is operated by the COE. I don't think there is a contractor. That's why I am uncertain.

Why do the senators and congressmen/women still get paid in a government shutdown? What's up with that?? Embarrassing!

Em, they don't, neither does their staff.

But they will get "back pay" later (was through this in 95/96)

When someone tells you to buy the same rig they own, listen, they might be right. When they tell you to buy a different rig then they own, really pay attention, they probably know something you don't.
