Hoover Dam - Leave pen knife behind.

We're in Las Vegas for 8 nights and decided to visit Hoover Dam. We were there 40 years ago and wanted to see it again... The area was really crowded and parking was scarce, but we found space about as far away up the hill as you can get... A really long walk down. After getting some pics of the Dam and the new bridge, we took the 54 steps down into the visitor center and had to empty pockets and walk through x-rays. I carry a really small folding knife on my keychain and was advised that could not enter. I've had this piece 40+ years and did not want to discard it so we had to leave - back up the 54 steps, then back to the truck which was exhausting... My pen or camera, or credit cards would do more damage than that knife! Oh well, that's our Feds at work.

A sharp #2 wood pencil can penetrate and do more harm than a little pocket knife and would pass metal detectors.... Some of the people that make these rules generally lack common sense....

Yes the new road and bridge is open to all traffic. Commercial etc. Unless you are in a high profile vehicle like an 18 wheeler you aren't going to see much as there is a raised "Jersey Barrier" the whole length of the bridge. If you take the old road down to the visitors center there is a nice parking area and you can walk up to the bridge and go to the other end. The walk way is on the north side of the bridge.

It's too bad there wasn't a sign at the beginning of the climb, letting you know what would not be allowed there.

You are ALL missing the main point.......aren't all Federal buildings, facilities, tourist sites, areas that have been advertised as not allowing knives, guns, etc??? Quite frankly, my husband would have stopped and thought "I bet they won't let me have this"....and would have left it. It's not all that hard to think ahead.....and it's their rules....

"Their rules" but they do work for us after all. Nothing but overkill with all the rules.
Are you familiar with Wikiup Reservoir in Oregon????? Noooo???? Well, apparently the terrorists will be or are familiar with it. Used to be able to drive around and on the dam. Now, they made a road about 100 yards from the original and we drive around it......It's about the most ludicrous thing I've seen. NO reason nor NO big impact if it was bombed.....but close off the old road so the fishermen can't drive up to the fishing (was a great place for the handicapped). YES, there IS overkill.... however, OPer should have known those rules. ๐Ÿ™‚ Those very same rules have stopped us from flying. ๐Ÿ™‚ RVing is more fun anyway. ๐Ÿ™‚ ๐Ÿ™‚

My main point was that this was the "Visitor Center" .... I've been in hundreds and never dealt with this level of security at a visitor center. The visitor center at The Buffalo Bill Reservoir Dam was wide open.. No Dam tours either. I guess that 1" blade would put fear into those security guards with nothing but 9mm handguns.

So you're in favor of allowing knives to be taken inside the dam? How about air planes? It's far easier to ban ALL such materials than to put the decision in the hands of a minimum wage employee.

I would hate to see someone try to take an air plane inside the dam. Brings back bad memories

Up until 911 when those 19 terrorist used box cutters to takeover those planes, you could carry a pocket knife, under 3" blade length, on a plane!! Now we are all considered dangerous!!
That came very close to being repealed about a year ago and airline personnel vigorously objected so it was killed.

Are you referring to the minimum wage employees that take that stuff home and sell it on ebay like the airplne security people? Outrageous.

Unless you have a link to back that up the only thing outrageous here is your post. Like the man said.... "just the facts".
