Key West in May

DH and I just made ressies for Boyds CG for mid May. We'll be there for 4 days. Know parking in KW as a true challenge. Can we plan on using the bus? What "Must Do" and "Don't Bother" experiences would you like to share? We love history, local bars/taverns, perhaps a boat ride. No fishing please! We're definitely not "late nite" type people, but LOVE Happy Hours! Thanks in advance for your help.

There is no problem driving into Key West. There can be parking issues in the Duval area. If you get there early, shouldn't be a problem. I've been there many times with my dually pickup.
Yep, actually drove to all of these places---in the last eight years. Missed Rhode Island and New Jersey.

See the Memorial to the sailors of the USS Maine at the Key West Cemetery. Tour Mel Fisher's Maritime Museum. Tour Ft Taylor. Make sure to get pics at the Southernmost Point in US Memorial.

We spend a lot of time in KW and we love the sunset celebration every night on Mallory Square. Unfortunately, it's not the same in the summer as it is during the winter/high season. Many of the street entertainers are no longer there, so it looses something in summer.

There are no shortages of bars and happy hours. The Hogfish Bar on Stock Island is owned by the same owners as Geiger Key Restaurant and GK is in a much nicer area and with no shady characters. It's on Geiger Key about mile marker 13 or 14. Go and get a hogfish sandwich.

It's going to be hot and humid in May so be prepared. KW becomes a lot less fun when it's so hot.

If you like to snorkel, take a trip out to Looe Key Reef. Looe Key Dive shop takes a couple trips out there every day.

Every evening before sunset there are all kinds of boats leaving from the marina to take a sunset cruise. They parade back and forth along Mallory Square while the sun sets. It's beautiful from the shore and I assume also beautiful from a boat, although we've never been. There are all kinds of boats and trips to choose from. I think you'd like it.

As far as Dry Tortugas...it's a long trip out and not terribly exciting or comfortable. The Tortugas are spectacular, especially if you snorkel, but you don't get much time there. It seems to be a little expensive for one day. We did it years ago and spent the night in a tent. It was hot as hell though.

We liked the Hemingway House too.

We've taken the buses. We usually park at the Kmart plaza and catch it from there, but it doesn't get you right down to Duval Street (which is where all the action is). We're not late night people either and like you we like happy hours, but in KW we have been known to stay out until midnight!~~~

Schooner Wharf Bar has good bands, the White tarpon has great martini's. For a boat ride, check out Seabago sunset cruise.... all you can drink ! Smokin Tuna also has good bands.
Bike or bus into Old Town ( Duval) from Boyd's .
Both the Hogfish and Rusty Anchor are on Stock Island and an easy walk from Boyd's

update--- almost forgot the Green Parrot... also good music

Next time we get down there, I want to take the ferry to Dry Tortugas National Park for the day.

Schooner Wharf Bar is my all time favorite. They have lots of afternoon singers and food is served. The turtle kraals is nearby on the wharf. Great area and you can go for a sunset cruise. Skip the star gazing cruise. Not worth it.

Butterfly Conservatory in Key West and the Hogfish Bar and Grill (on Stock Island)- also, if you're looking for a boat ride, check out the Danger cruises. They have large sailing craft. X1 on Mallory Square.

we used the shuttle/taxi while at Boyd's. pick you up at the gate and you can grab one anywhere in Key West for the ride back.

We found Hemmingway House quite an interesting tour. Agree on Duval Street. Lots to see and do and just about every bar has decent live entertainment.

Boyd's is roughly five miles to Duval Street where most of the real action takes place. Lots of bars and happy hours, and don't miss sunset at Mallory Square. Lots of folks bicycle in KW and cars generally make room for them, and I'd encourage you to bike back and forth if you're up to it. Don't know about using the bus, but there's lots of pink taxis around.
