New Orleans rv parks

Plan to visit New Orleans later this year. Would like to spend time visiting some of the mansions along river road area. Can any one suggest an RV park that would be conventient for this? Thanks to all who share their knowledge.

One word if warning, try to avoid the week between Christmas and New Years. It was a circus. One of our main goals this trip was to go to the WWII museum for two days. The first day we arrived late and the place was packed! It was too crowded for me and we left after about two hours. We arrived on day two at opening , it was much better until about 1:00 PM. We left and went to lunch, came back and attend the film. We plan to go back for Christmas next year, but we will arrange our schedule to be there the week before Christmas.

the Sugar Bowl and the professional football team being in town for the weekend plus the big New Years Eve celebration never occurred to us.

We also like to stay at Pontchartrain Landing. It is safe for New Orleans and it is nice being on the water. It is an easy drive to downtown and the French Quarter. It is also an easy drive to Metairie which has several of our favorite restaurants, (Drago's and Deannies)
They also have a decent restaurant on site with fair food if you are too tired to get out. For those that don't want to drive the 15 minutes to the French Quarter they have shuttle pick up. I do recommend paying the few dollars more for the deluxe pull through sites as they are bigger and are nicely landscaped.

I’ll be heading down to NOLA Friday afternoon, but by train not RV. We were originally planning on taking RV, but the boss decided this winter trip the RV sits it out. I do still plan on checking out a few of the state park campgrounds and private RV parks with our rental car while I am down there

Also have stayed at Pont. Landing, enjoyed it very much. They had a shuttle bus to/from the French Quarter (no driving) and took Passport America to make it affordable.

Are you a Coast to Coast member? Abita Springs RV resort is nice and town is quaint with a good microbrew pub restaurant.

Another vote for Bayou Segnette. Try to book c1017.

I stayed at the New Orleans KOA and found it to be decent. It wasn't too far of a drive to get into the French Quarter. A little expensive (but what KOA isn't?!).

Bayou Signette SP is a really nice one. Our preferred when camping in NOLA. Short run into the city. Very well maintained and clean. Space between campsites. Very clean showerhouses. WiFi included.
Since you're interested in visiting the plantations then Bayou Signette makes sense. It's on the west edge of NOLA. The plantations are along the Mississippi River west and north of NOLA. Heading west from Bayou Signette you avoid the NOLA traffic. A few small towns along US 90 but it's a good road and traffic isn't bad. When you get on the river road (LA 18) you'll start getting to the plantations that are open for tours. Oak Alley west of Vacherie is probably the most famous as it's picture is most used for tourist advertisements. You'll recognize seeing the picture of the place from the river road looking up the walkway under the oaks. All the plantations are a little different due to when they were built and in full operation, who owned them at the time, and crops grown.
Rosedown Plantation at St Francisville is operated by the State of LA and is about a nice 3 hour drive from Bayou Signette. Very nice tour and not the crowds you can get at some of the plantations closer to NOLA. A nice side tour after leaving Rosedown is a bit further north to Angola Prison. They've got a very nice tour and museum. Lots of history. You don't enter the prison grounds and not likely you'll even see any of the prisoners. The tour is of the old part of the prison which includes the old execution chamber and all is outside the first gate. Well worth getting off the beaten path to visit.

Second vote for Bayou Segnette state park. We stayed there last year and found it to be close enough to New Orleans, easy in/out and a great park.

We’re in Bayou Segnette state park right now. Beautiful park and 20min from downtown. There’s also Ponchatrain Landing RV that was a 2nd option and a little closer to downtown. Can’t beat the state park price though at $29/nt

Having stayed in one of the RV parks in new Orleans a couple of weeks ago, I would advise you to find a park near new Orleans.
I will not be staying in new Orleans again, however they do have good public transportation.
