Ocean Lakes Family Campground - HOLY GOLF CARTS!!!!!!

Currently staying at OLFC in Myrtle Beach. Before we came here we read that it was a big place, and can get very crowded, but I didn't realize the golf cart population would outnumber the people!
I attempted to go to the laundry facility in my pickup on Saturday to wash some bedding that got soiled due to a sick child, it took me 30 minutes to go less than half a mile just to find a parking lot full of golf carts, I was not happy. I understand why the golf carts are so popular around here, if you don't have one or rent one you are going to be very frustrated when you try to go anywhere.

Don't get me wrong, this is a nice park, with very nice amenities, nice people, and nice facilities. I just don't care for how populated it is. Just too many people and golf carts for our liking. We will probably look elsewhere next year for our family vacation.

We'll be here a few more days, maybe some of the crowd will depart after today.

Stayed at MB State Park last week and there were plenty of golf carts there too, but most I saw were very aware of folks walking/riding bikes in campground. As my daughter said, since MB is known as big golfing area, it makes sense that golf carts are a big thing there. Her in-laws bought condo/timeshare there for the golfing opportunities.

I was totally unfamiliar with this place, but checked it out after reading through this thread. The wife has been wanting to camp at a beach location for a few years but this will not be the place. I guess if it floats your boat have at it. Personally I don't get it. Some of those pads are less than 12' from the next. I am thinking condo or hotel and flying down, the hell with that place and places like it.

Just returned from Ocean Lakes a couple of hours ago. As usual, had a blast.

Just FYI. We were in HH11. That's the section right near the water park. I checked and my concrete pad was approximately 20' wide and a little over 50' long. The grassy area between us and the next pad was about 25' wide. More than enough room to park the golf cart and then beside it was the F450.

For those who think the carts are too much and the sites are too small, no problem. That just means more available spaces for the rest of us. Happy camping.

By the way. We're going back in less than three weeks. 🙂

.... and that is why we camp next door at Lakewood! Lakewood doesn't allow transit campers to bring their own golf cart, which means less golf carts in the park.

Right now, we have OL on the calendar next weekend, four weekends after that, and then one more late October. 🙂

We camp at MB a couple of times a year but, never again on a peak weekend. We prefer Lakewood. We stayed at OL on a big weekend a couple of decades and golf carts were a problem. We used to go for every spring bike rally as well. Now we just go at other non-peak weekends. We stayed at OL for about a month when I retired but, it was February, March. We had a very nice time of it. The MB (Surfside) campgrounds are great in the off season. We always take our little pug dogs and OL and Lakewood have always been pet friendly. We're going back in October for the MB Air Force base reunion. Should be an awesome time to RV at the beach.

Not all RV'ers are destination campers or weekend campers also with a specific destination. For some RV'ers there is NO weeks or months in advance for researching and planning for a CG.

And the fact that I take CG's as they come along, as I travel without a specific destination. So for 'me' it was quite a surprise.

But no problem. If I pulled in and it was over run with golf carts I would stay the night but not any longer and I would just pull out in the morning and find another CG. Ahhh...the benefits of having an RV on wheels. :C

My goodness, I was making that statement based on what the OP said. I was not making this statement to apply to every type of camper. He made the comment that it was the family vacation and he had done some checking into it but he did not know that there were so many golf carts. I had all of that in mind when making my comment. I understand what you are saying though. With that said, it sometimes pays to read a few reviews from people who have actually been there and I do understand that not everyone can do that especially when traveling the country.

Not all RV'ers are destination campers or weekend campers also with a specific destination. For some RV'ers there is NO weeks or months in advance for researching and planning for a CG.

I hope that you were not referring to me. I was only pointing out that golf carts are a fact of life at Ocean Lakes. This is widely known. You do not have to dig too deep to find out that information. It seems that the OP ended up happy and I am glad about that. I do understand why he was not happy with all of the carts though.

The only other statements that I made were in relation to information about the Myrtle Beach area that were either not accurate or greatly exaggerated and those were not made by the OP. I would never talk down or dump on anyone and I hope that no one feels that way. People read this forum and a lot use it to help plan trips.

Not sure who, specifically, you are pointing the finger at, but I see a wide variety of responses here. Many are in agreement with the OP.

For the record, my point was that the golf cart situation at OL is widely known and there are a multitude of threads that describe it in great (sometimes nauseating) detail. It would take very little effort to research before booking and know what he/she was getting into.

Personally, I love OL and we have been there a number of times, but cannot imagine being there over a major holiday weekend like the OP was on July 4th.

OL is what it is. People have complained about golf carts there forever. The place fills up all season though, so they have little incentive to change things. If it's not your thing, camp elsewhere.

We just got back from 2 weeks at OL on 7/9. Our family loves it there. Are kids are 10 and 14 and know to be careful. Our son rides his bike(with a helmet) and knows to watch out for others as they may not be watching out for him. We see some activity that is not great but 99% of the time everyone is in check and after 11 it is quiet.

We are looking forward to 7/26 when we return for another 2 weeks. Golf cart in the bed of the truck ready to ride around with the wife and kids. It's all a preference. We walk the beach and walk to Lakewood. My daughter says "glad we never started coming here over OL or we may have missed out on the fun OL offers". Everyone has an opinion and choice. That is what is great about this country.
