Richmond area camping?

We will be going to a lacrosse tournament near Richmond in July of this year ... looking for suggestions on campgrounds. We probably wouldn't need that much to do at the actual campground although a pool would be nice for when we come back at night. I'm sure it will be warm in July ๐Ÿ™‚ Has to be pet friendly. Thanks!

By the Way, visited Watertown several times when my son was stationed at Fort Drum. Lots of fond memories. Beautiful there in the summer, little cold in the winter.

If you would like something with a little more of a country feel, check out Cozy Acres in Powhatan, VA. Depending on where your tournament is being held, it may or may not be convenient. Powhatan is the next county over from Chesterfield.

Here are some ideas - North of Richmond - Americamps. West of Richmond - Small Country Camping. South East - Chippokes Plantation State Park.

Virginia's state parks are awesome.

Americamps is a very good campground that is about 20 minutes north of Richmond, VA on I95. Check out their listing under the "find a campground". At the same exit is McGeorge Rolling Hills RV center. They are very good people to know if you have any RV issues.

Thanks for the suggestions. I had forgotten about Kings Dominion. That might be a fun stop on the way there or home if we could make it work ๐Ÿ™‚

I would suggest one of these campgrounds. Kings Dominion has a nice campground adjacent to the amusement park. This could be fun for the kids. The campground is 22 miles north of Richmond via I95.

Another good choice would be Americamps which is located 15 miles north of Richmond via I95.

Both campgrounds would be a good choice and both are easy on/off I95. Over the years we have stayed at both and have always been satisfied.

Hope this info helps.

It's not that loud. Especially the airport. it's not a real busy airport and the actual airport is several miles away, and the flight path is not over Americamp.

I stayed in Americamp in Ashland, VA when it was a KOA. It was nice and had just been completely re-done - that was three years ago. Right after that they left KOA. It was convenient to get to - right off 95 the exit from 95. It is a wooded campground off an industrial area. It had the best cable tv selection of any campground we have been to. There was a small swimming pool and a small playground. Easy to get to Richmond or any place else in that area.

This is the one we used when we visited Richmond.

I live in the Richmond area. I would say that the americamp in ashland is probably going to be the most convenient and is closest to civilization, shopping, restaurants, entertainment.

If the idea of being a little more out in the wilderness and have a trails to hike and bike, a lake to canoe and fish in, and woods to look at sounds more appealing then pocahontas state park which is south or richmond would be nice.

Pocahontas is still really close to civilization but not as close as ashland.

Hard to find a better campground than Pocahontas State Park; we are in the area....please feel free to PM if you need anything.

It's always a good idea to include the two letter state designation whenever you're looking for info on here. Example, there are over 20 cities/towns named Columbus. (I quit counting)
Retired and visiting as much of this beautiful country as I can.

Thanks for the suggestions. The sites at the State Park look great! I will look into all of those mentioned...
