How prevalent is theft at campgrounds?

I see items to lock your power cord down so it cant be stolen, locks for coolers, etc. What about leaving your RV unlocked while at the pool?

Thanks

In 44 years of camping across the country we've only had 1 incidence and that was during a festival with lot's of people who do not camp regularly.

In all the years I've been camping only once can I remember anything being stolen. It was my son's handheld video game he left in his bed. It was stolen right out of the popup. I told him to put it under the seat in the truck but he knew better:-). In the end he got it back because the boy who stole it sister noticed he had it and made him return it and apologize. We keep valuables locked up in a lock box under the seats of the truck.

I also leave chairs, grill and other things outdoors most of the time.

X3. We lock our bikes to one of our wheels. Never had anything stolen in 22 years of camping. Everything very valuable is out of sight.

There is a post on here from a few weeks ago where someone had iPads stolen from their RV at a restaurant. Said they normally lock it but must have missed it. Someone earlier in the thread noted locking at pit stops.

I've never had a problem at a campground but like others said, I take extra precautions if the campground is relatively empty so no one would be watching during the day or if I'm in an urban area where I worry about outsiders. (rare but have camped in cities a couple times).

I've considered the possibility just one time. I got stuck in a traffic jam on an expressway for a couple of hours, and when I could get off, I pulled into a CG that I hadn't scoped out on Park Reviews. There were spaces and some old TTs, but nothing with an engine. All looked like they'd never move again. Not a single human around, including in the CG office. It may have all been innocent, but I moved on down the road.

In 45 plus years we have never taken any extra precautions nor experienced any theft.

I am thinking that there well be some circumstance or locations where a location would indicate vigilance ether based on history for the location or current circumstance... We have not ever camped or encountered such circumstance.... Nor have I had any first person feedback from folks we have camped with...

Just to calibrate our experience... we are not full timers but we do travel 8 to 10 months out of the year east to west , north to south.

Our camping experiences are exclusively at sites and locations which overwhelming other RVer's doing what we are doing...

We camp without thinking of somebody taking our stuff - even in California. And we camp along side of people enjoying the great outdoors - not like a trailer park.

We have been camping for most of our married life....going on 40 years in October.

We have NEVER had anything stolen while in a campground. We HAVE HAD stuff stolen out of our camper, but it was sitting beside the house when it was burglarized.

We put stuff out like chairs, BBQ grill, etc and even leave our bikes outside and untethered. I figure if they are going to come onto our site and take stuff, they have a plan and a little chain won't keep them from stealing the bikes. The chairs can be replaced pretty easily, as can the grill and lighting, etc.

Campers always looks out for other campers... I know we do...

Anything of value is inside my truck. They go where we go... That includes my 2KW Honda Generator haha...

Keeping things out of sight and out of mind works for us...

I left one time at Westmoreland just down the road from here where we live and when I got home I couldn't find my hand ax. Just so happens we back to Westmoreland the next weekend and there it was laying by the tree where I left it haha...

Another time we was camping at ELKMONT in the Smoky Mtns and only two os us campers were setup in one of their loops. The guy across the loop road from me was also in POPUP camper and had chained his 3KW Honda generator to a tree. I guess both of us had left the camp site around 2PM to go get some supplies from the local town of TOWNSEND. When I got back I found I couldn't drive down the loop road for a felled tree over the road. I just drove around to the other side and got to my popup trailer. Sure enough someone in broad daylight cut the small tree down where the neighbor had his 3KW Honda chained to the tree. Honda generator was gone... About that time the neighbor came back from town and there we both stood looking at the cut down small tree... geesch.

I had to do his batteries every morning with my generator until I left a few days later...

True story - It does happen

More than 4 decades of camping experience here. Whenever we are off the campsite we lock our rig. Bikes are locked to our rig. Chairs, table, and grill are left outside on site. Never have had to lock a power cord but with the prevalence of copper theft these days it would not surprise me if it becomes a necessity.

While I'm sure there is an occasional incident. There are very few thefts at CG's.
Most camper watch out for each other. Yes their will be teenagers taking beer or bikes but even then it is rare. Be reasonably cautious and you'll be fine.

RV are not very secure anyway. All it takes is a large screwdriver to gain entry to RV's.
