Wanted to let all know that a portion of the I-85 North bridge at Piedmont/GA400 has collapsed.

There was a fire that caused a portion of the interstate to collapse. Right now interstate 85 is completely closed both south and north bound at this location.

They have no time frame when the road will be open due to possible other structural damage to the roadway.

I'd just go up I-75, go thru early Sunday AM. Go up to at least Macon, Forsyth or High Falls SP. Then make the trip early Sunday morning.

^^^^^ THIS ^^^^^^

Just came out of Florida heading toward Cleveland then on to Buffalo and Rochester, NY

27 is a little slower but MUCH BETTER that going anywhere near ATL.

I took 27 north to ROME, Georgia (almost to TN) then got on I75 and from there.

Personally, I'd make a big detour out of Florida and visit some other states on the way home. Why subject yourself to that mess?

Depending on when you are heading here I would time your trip. Right at this moment both I 85 South and North are closed.

GDOT has closed I 85 North starting at the 75/85 split in downtown Atlanta. So if you have been through Atlanta before 75/85 comes together north of of airport and stays together through town and then splits again. This split is where it is closed right now.

I 85 South coming into Atlanta is being diverted at I 285, GDOT is only letting local traffic on I 85 south beyond I 285 and I 85 is closed starting a Lenox road.

GA 400 South is diverted at Lenox and there are numerous side roads next to I 85 that are closed right now.

Why I say plan your timings is that I 285 is not a fun road during normal rush hour and now it is going to have to handle all this additional traffic of people using it to make it to a road that will get them into the city.

They are expecting 75 South to be really congested as people use it as well to get into town.

They say our morning rush hour goes from 5 AM to noon and afternoon rush hour starts at 1:00 PM to 7:00 PM. So this is going to make commuting so much more fun...NOT

Just take 75 to 285 that goes around atlanta on the west side and east side. The bridge collapse is on the north side Atlanta way after where you can get on 285.

We must be willing to get rid of the life we've planned,
so as to have the life that is waiting for us.

Thanks for posting. I imagine traffic will be a mess for a good while. We are headed near there in a couple weeks...I85 northbound from Montgomery AL., loop 285 around south side of Atlanta, then I20 to Columbia SC. I have looked for months for a east-west route that is farther south of Atlanta. I might just take I10 to I95.

It's not all Interstate, but this route stays far south of Atlanta without going all the way to I10. I would think going to I10 would add many hours to your trip.

Currently travelling on I75 to Detroit from Florida. Can someone please tell me if this bridge collapse affects my travels? Thank you.

Depends on where you're at now. Either get on I59 at Chattanooga, or on I-40 at Knoxville to I26 to I95.

I would imagine that it would effect the drive in regards to additional traffic from people that normally would use I 85.

All of our news channels are showing this and telling people to find other ways around the city. This means that I 20, I 285 and I 75 are all going to take the brunt of this.

They said they are gearing up FEMA and GDOT to start accessing but I know it will be closed for a while.

We travel through Atlanta a lot - prefer to stay off the loop and drive straight through... even pulling the rig. The loop is even worse than the highways straight through town.
