Yellowstone again...

Spent an hour or so reading posts concerning Yellowstone but never found a clear answer to my questions.

I know I want to stay inside the park, leaning toward Bridge Bay. On the website it lists the limit for RV's at 40 feet. I come in at 42 feet, will I have any issues or are they not kidding about that 40 feet max limit? Also I have a toy hauler wich is tall, any concerns with clearance?

I'm late to the party here, but.......... Stayed at Fishing Bridge. Too cramped and if the stumps at the back of the site are too high you will be limited to how far you can back up. When you cross the stumps you are also right in the space behind you. Not a good situation.

Bridge Bay we have stayed in as well. There you can get into a turn out type space rather than a back in. we are 40' with 4 slides and we do not stick out too far to cause problems. Its dry camping but really fun. Lots of wildlife. So we are done with FB and will only go to BB. Bridge Bay is also a very central location to work all areas of YNP.

At a trailer length of 23' I would not sweat it at all. You will fit in virtually everything except tent sites. Your question is availability of ANY site at this point. Forget holiday weekends. Maybe forget most weekends. I hate to be on fixed dates & make reservations but sometimes that is the way it has to be. Be flexible if you can with your dates & choice of CGs.

Thanks all. My trailer is 23 ft (box) so alone it is plenty short, its the combo I'm worried about. The website says overall length of 40 is max. I'm going to back the truck up and get a no kidding overall length. Once I get backed into the sight I can unhook and loose most of the tongue length of the trailer so I'm sure I'll be able to fit.

Must admit, I hate dealing with CGs that use third party booking agents & charge a fee for the privilege.

The lady I spoke to, a season camphost in the park, made it very clear, If you tell them that your unit is shorter & you don't fit then too bad. You lose. You won't be found another spot. You lose at least one night fee & booking fee.

There is a plus side. You may cancel up to 48 hours before arrival time without penalty. So, if you feel lucky, keep checking.

Well, I lied. Since Xanterra took over, every CG can handle RVs up to 40' long. Just call for a reservation, and send a deposit. When the NPS was running things, there used to be a page on their site that showed max length for each CG and the number of sites of that size. And many had sites with a maximum length smaller than 40'. Perhaps Zanterra got a bad batch of 30 inch yardsticks.

I am told my 34' 5th wheel is "to long" every time I try to make a reservation at Madison Campground so I make my reservation for Bridge Bay and stop at Madison and ask if they have a site available and I have been able to find a spot at Madison 5 out 6 times I tried.

My 32 foot TT plus TV is 65 feet. My first time, I stay at Fishing Bridge and Madison. Tight fit, but not problem.

The last time I stay at Baker Hole NFS on the West side for a few days. At a NF campsite on the NE near Cooke city for a few days and them Grand Teton on the South Side for a few days. Lots of room at each location.

My brother stays there. His coach is 40 feet 6 inches. He does stick out 6 inches and they put an orange cone in front of his rig. I would call them and give correct numbers, maybe they have a extra long spot somewhere. Maybe when you un hitch you could lose 2 feet? You would be fine then. My brother also has a toad along. parks on the side.

Well, at least in the case of Fishing Bridge, the length they are talking about is the length of the RV not including any tow vehicle. There is a space for your vehicle next to the RV as it is parked. One would think that that would be the case at most of the other campgrounds in Yellowstone.

To tell them that your RV is 55' would be a mistake unless you don't intend to unhook the tow vehicle. It's no wonder that they couldn't find a space for that length.

Nope. Sorry. The length is the LOA. LOA to them is bumper to bumper, truck & trailer. Tried 2 weeks ago for Bridge Bay myself for the end of July. No luck.

At 55'LOA I squeezed into Bridge Bay in 08. No reservations that time. Must have been extremely lucky.

Try them on the phone. You might get lucky.

They don't come out and use a tape measure on your RV. The problem is that Fishing Bridge sites are very narrow and tight. If you can get into the site I doubt anyone will complain.

At Fishing Bridge, no problem with the height (mostly) and the extra 2' - just make sure you're backed in snug and as far back as you can go. You should be ok.
