Okay, we made it to Yellowstone, still very busy, lots of tourists. I think they should have more campgrounds open! We are staying in Baker's Hole on the West side, cannot get into Madison for 2 more days it's that full. They charge $22 for electric, $16 without. Taps are around, but no dumpstation.

Sorry to disagree, but I am there and everything is sold out nightly. Doesn't matter where you stay, the drives are going to be long, the park is big. If someone wants or needs hookups, the only places that will have them and be open will be outside the park.

Yea, and staying outside the park makes the park even bigger and the drives longer. Not that some of the RV parks outside ar pretty nice and pricey, stay inside if at all possible. You will have a much better experience. You can stay at a nice RV park most anywhere, but if you are going to Yellowstone then experience Yellowstone by staying inside Yellowstone!

This time of year I would think that you can show up anyplace anytime & find space available.

I don't like long commutes so it would be an inside the park CG for me. A much nicer experience too. You can get a jammed together commercial CG anywhere in the country. There is only one Yellowstone.

I like Mammoth also but you may have a hard time getting in since some of the other CGs are closed. The park is huge so I definitely recommend staying IN the park. Otherwise, lots of driving!

Enjoy. It is beautiful this time of year.

Here's the official Yellowstone site for campground in the park. Please note the closing dates as many are approaching the date. We really like Mammoth in the fall for all the elk around. It doesn't accept reservations and it's open year-round. You need to stay somewhere nearby the previous night so you can get to Mammoth early morning for a site.

Have a great trip!

Grizzly RV Park in West Yellowstone is exceptional. Great central location also.

Fishing Bridge closes tomorrow. Park we are staying in at the North Entrance is selling out every night and turning people away. Mammoth campground was full by noon. The Road construction and closures are inconvenient, but the weather and fishing is beyond fantastic (though heavy rains a few days ago has blown out the Yellowstone, so I am working a few of the smaller streams right now), so the tradeoff is worth it.

We camped at Henry's Lake State Park, Idaho. Just across the boarder - about 15 min away from Yellowstone. For that drive, we got a large site, wonderful views of the lake, peace & quiet, and low rates. Very clean bathhouse also.

If you are just "car" sight-seeing, a couple days, you get tired of seeing/smelling the same sights over and over (I lived just outside the park for many years)
If you are hiking, until the weather chases you out.
Fishing Bridge would be where I would stay.
Be prepared for any weather, it has already snowed there this month.

yep, I got tired of smelling sulfur pots and left one day early after seeing all I wanted to see.
