1/2 ton towable FW

Can you recommend some 1/2 ton towable FW manufactures....

In looking at units it is important to us to have a walk around queen bed.

Extremely important to have access to the bathroom and refrigerator when slides are in.

Unit should be under 27 or 30 feet in length.

Any recommendations on manufactures or floor plans?

My 5er is "1/2 ton towable". This is a joke. The last time I scaled I had a pin weight of 1,960 pounds. This would go down a bit if I was full of fresh water.
My old 2002 f350 7.3 was 140 pounds over GVWR with this 1/2 ton towable 5er.
I head out for a 13 day trip next Wednesday. I will try to make a pass across the scales on my way out of town, and post my weights here.

I've kind of chuckled on this thread as we have been contemplating changing 5ers to something a bit shorter. The half ton towable do have some floor plans in the length we would consider but our TV is not a half ton. Lots of choices for ones longer and heavier than we don't care to own.

My 5er is a 1/2 Towable that was a joke the 1st owner had a new Chev. and made 1 trip and I got the trailer lol He was afraid to tow it with the Chev. I had a Dodge CTD and still have the trailer easy pull for My truck and I bought it cheep the other people never bought a trailer again what a way to con people saying 1/2 ton pullable by Keystone others are out there also...

My experience with a ½ ton fifth wheel, on a drive to Yellowstone, from New Jersey. The 2011 Silverado was set up with the 5.3 and 3.73 gears, along with the towing package. It is a standard bed and rated for a 9600 pound trailer. Trailer was a new 2011 Wildcat.

Over the Cat scales at Flying J exit 2 in Jersey with a full freshwater tank, and loaded for a long camping trip:

Truck only:
Front 3320
Rear 2360
Gross 5680

Truck & Trailer:
Front 3180
Rear 3740
Trailer 8000
Gross 14920

Calculated:
Truck 6920
Pin 1240
Trailer 9240

So, with the truck rated at 7000, and the combined at 15000 and the trailer at 9600, I ain’t no bricks shy of a full load. This was a little high to me, so for our first journey we decided to not go to Alaska. So we dropped a second spare tire for the truck and the fresh water. Thus we dropped 400 to 450 pounds of gross weight all out of the trailer. The cost to weigh was $10.50, cheap to know as opposed to guessing.

So over the mountains we went. It pulls fine on the flat lands along the Atlantic coast. At 65 mph the transmission saw 180-190. Even with the fairly low pin weight it handled well, no swaying, just a well behaved load. Crossing the eastern continental divide from the town of Seneca Rocks, WV I had my first worry moment. Outside temp was about 80 at the bottom of the mountain. The truck pulled this steep mountain at about 30 to 40 mph, mostly in 2nd gear, with an occasional drop to 1st in the tight turns. The coolant peaked at about 240 or so, and then the temperature dropped to 220. I guess the electric fan has two speeds. Transmission fluid also hit 250 for just a moment, before dropping into the 230 to 240 range. The truck did not give a warning light. Anyone know the temperature to throw a warning and drop into the limp mode?

The tow/haul mode works sweetly going down the mountains, only an occasional use of brakes was necessary. The rest of the mountains pulled with no real drama. Topped most of them in 3rd at 40 to 50 mph. Got about 8.4 mpg on this leg from Jersey to Elkins WV.

Continuing on across the plains all was fine until the long constant pull against a strong headwind in South Dakota. With an outside temp of 105 the truck began to heat up on any extended grade. Four times the temp of the coolant climbed to 240 or so, and the transmission fluid also climbed to 221. Each time this happened, I shut down the A/C for 15 minutes and cooled everything down. The truck spent most of its time in 3rd gear under these conditions, at about 55 to 60 mph. The big headwind (maybe 40 mph) killed my mileage down to 8 even. A bigger truck would be needed to keep up with traffic. The strong headwind limited me to 4th and about 65mph on the downgrades. It would not stay in 5th, unless dropping into a river valley.

Easier pulling from Rapid City, SD to Gardiner, MT with no real headwinds. With temps in the mid 90’s the tranny held 190 to 205. Got about 9.2 mpg. Truck made it West, but I will be shopping for ¾ ton in either gas or diesel for more performance in the mountains.

On the trip East, I normally had a tailwind and cooler temperatures. Across North Dakota and through the Michigan UP, and on down to WV, mileage was in the middle nines with one whole day at 10.1. Plenty of truck for this driving.


After this trip I upgraded to a 2012 F250 with the 6.7 diesel. In 15,000 miles of towing in 13 and 14 no drama at all. The bigger brakes only were needed after the loss of trailer braking between Durango and Silverton Colorado. Ford replaced the trailer brake controller under warranty in Steamboat Springs. I like the F250 with a 10k door sticker since it gives me the towing limits I need (I like to de-rate the manufactures about 10%) and it allows me to use the left lanes and some parkways in the Northeast without the camper.

Are there hitches that weigh 80#? Sure, but would they work in his situation? Only he can be the judge of that.
Rear windows and cab sheet metal can get expensive real quick!!


My hitch weighs 100 lbs (slider). The installation kit (frame brackets mounting hardware and bed rails weigh about another 100). That is 200 lbs.

Before our current Motorhome, we towed a, 1999 25 ft. Jayco 5th wheel with no slides with 2 different half-ton Chevys for 10 years. It worked out fine but I always said that I wouldn't want any more weight; not even a few hundred pounds. For the life of me, I can't figure out why the manufacturers don't make more truly half-ton towable 5th wheels in the 25 to 27 ft. range but they don't. There are plenty in the 30-32 ft. range but they are really too heavy for the average half-ton. Sure it might work if you have a newer half-ton equipped with the biggest motor, heavy duty suspension, etc. but most half-ton aren't. Oh, and don't pay any attention to salesmen. Fully research it yourself and don't tow any more than 80 or 90% of the truck's advertised capacity.

Why do you want a FW? Lots of nice TT's out there that you can tow with a 1/2ton. You can tow a bigger TT with a 1/2 ton than a FW.

I am pretty sure the OP truck would be a short bed. NO slider hitch is going to only weigh 80 lbs. PullRite 4100 16K SuperGlide 5th Wheel Hitch weight 195 lbs. Chris

Hello, You most likely want something newer but for over 12 years we've towed a 2003 Fleetwood Prowler 27 5A. It has the walk around queen in the front. Its 27'11" long and loaded up its just over 7000lbs. It does have bunks in the back so maybe you don't want that. We have always towed it with our 2001 4.7L Tundra 2wd extra cab. Good Luck.

Open range lf305bh, people tow it with a tundra equipped with extra rear spring or air bags or timbrins. Need the 5.7l v force. I have done a ton(lol) of research. Look at the open range forum. If with ford or Chevy or dodge check that forum. I think it will have all the features you want. I did not buy one because I may be getting a cabin instead good luck. Guy who tows on that forum is Davy Crockett the hitch weight is 80lbs not 300lbs

IF, as you stated now that your truck is a 1500HD...JIMNLIN is right...it's a far more "beefier 1/2 ton then GM's 'normal" half ton pick up during that time frame....OP needs to look at his RAWR and weigh his truck to see how much pin weight he can put in the bed of the truck.

I think he needs to weigh his truck and whatever amount is on his drive axle, add an additional 200# for a 5er hitch, and go from there....Use GVW of 5er and take 20% of that to get a ball park idea of what pin weight you might be adding to the weight on the rear axle..

BUT OP also mentioned SLIDE(S)...how heavy of a 5er is he planning on getting. Everyone knows that one slide is going to add more weight and more slides are going to make it even heavier....Do the math and use some common sense and try to err to the side of safety in picking out a 5er you're going to tow,
