Disc brakes

Hello gang ,

I have been contemplating taking a ride to Elkhart to see the sites.... While I am there I may get Mor/Ryde add the Disc Brake system... I already have the IS system on the vehicle.... My quoted cost is right around $3,000.00 .. I know it worth it , I want to hear the cons ( if any) .. If you get a flat and the tire shreds the hydraulic line , will the other 3 brakes still work , or will all the fluid drain and you lose all brakes ? Sorry for the newbie questions...

Well . . It looks like I will be getting the conversion done and not having to drive to Indiana... Found a local trailer repair shop that has done this conversion many times... they quoted me $2700.00 for the Kodiak 8K.. and It will not cost me 3 days vacation + round trip travel... But they are telling me that because my hubs now have the Nev-R-Lube bearings , that the new set up will also need those because of the spindle . If not , it would have been $500.00 less . .

Late model Fords do not require a separate module but I'm not sure when that started. Initial setup of the installed controller asks if RV brakes are electric or hydraulic.

Does the module usually come with the installation or does that need to be added after the fact , or by someone else?
On the Redwood with disk brake option, the module is already installed. Just plug and go. It will accept any truck.

I had Morryde install disks on my last RV towed by an 05 Ford. They installed the module as part of the install. They ask what you use for a tow vehicle and quote the job. You can use a P3 if you want.

Something else... The Carlisle has a tiny reservoir and I had better luck using a rheostat and bleeding at low pressure. I did that after bleeding at full voltage and I got out more air. Craig

Thanks Golf Bears. I got the 2008 afterwards and the Redwood already had the module, so I guess I never noticed the difference. It just worked when I plugged it in 🙂

What the "module" does:

Brake controllers that are not specifically designed to work with E/H systems are looking for a resistive load. A DC magnet is, after all, just a long coil of wire with an iron core.

The variable speed pump on a hydraulic system is an inductive load with very little inherent resistance.

The module adds a resistor to the system so the controller "thinks" it is seeing brake magnets at the trailer end and sends the control signal.

Ya we towed our Redwood with disk brakes home with a 2006 Ford, and it needed the module. The 2006 did not have the select option for disk/electric. Not even real sure if this 2008 does.

You might want to look at DirectLink disc brake with ABS and CAN bus controller. They also have an extended stability sway control for trailer that will interface.

Been FTing for 9+ years with 3 Excel 5th wheels. Had Mor/Ryde install Kodiak disc brakes with Carlisle actuator. Awesome performance and well worth the bucks. Last 2 rigs had factory installed Dexter which work well also. Like already said the parts for the Dexter are limited availability and very expensive $100+ per axle. Kodiak are the 315 series GM pads available at every corner auto parts store and you can get pads for $15 to $60 per axle depending on what you want.
If I had my choices I'd go with the Kodiak. On RV disc brakes if you lose pressure anywhere in the system you don't have brakes. Chance of anything happening like that are very slim. In automotive we started using a split system in the late 70's.....the RV industry is that far behind time. We (automotive) had disc brakes in the 60's (optional). There is a good reason why we went to disc brakes. Get it!!! rockin'

Carlisle makes and interface box to go between GM controller and Carlisle actuator. Had that setup on our previous Montana and the same setup on our Redwood. No lag and sure makes a world of difference stopping.
