Dutchmen Voltage 3990

OK, after selling our passport we have spent the better part of 15 months looking for the right toy hauler. I love the Fuzion & Raptor. Then last night we found itโ€ฆthe dutchmen Voltage. I hadn't even looked outside of Fuzion or Raptor, however the 3990 checked every box on our want list. Nothing else we looked at did that. THEN I saw the weight..16k that means 20 or 21 loaded probably. I have a 2012 350 drw. Im curious what other toy hauler owners are towing this amount of weight with?

We had our 2012 Voltage 3950 painted to match our 2008 F-350 King Ranch. After getting the wrong numbers from Dutchmen, we now have a 2008 F-450 King Ranch. A much better fit. Now if we could get our 3950 fixed, maybe we could take a trip!

I recently purchased the Grand Design Momentum 385TH toy hauler. Dry weight is 15,500 pounds with a total GVWR of 19,500. I am no where near the 19,500 and I pull it no problem with my 2011 Ford F-350 DRW 6.7 diesel. I was also looking at the Voltage along with the Cyclone, Fuzion and Raptor. When I started doing thorough research decided on the Momentum. If you have not had a chance to see the Momentum line make it a point to check it out before making your final decision.

I pull a 2014 Voltage 3895 with 2012 F350 4x4 long bed dualy with no issues.
Similar weight with 19K GVWR on 3895 and 20K on 3990

A good friend recently purchased the 3990 and he pulls it with a 2012 Chevy 3500 DRW. No air bags.

He said he has had no issues and the truck oulls and stops just fine. I know he has not weighed the unit to get loaded weights.

We really liked this trailer as well except for the couch layout in relation to the TV (same complaint my friend has). You are always looking left to see the TV. We just walked the new Voltage 3970 and my wife really likes the layout.

Yeah that was a must have for me....6 point auto level. I used to spend over an hour getting our tt as level as I could.

Heartland, Momentum and I think XLRs by forest river as well have hyd slides on 2 main slides and elec on the bedroom slide. I'm sure there are others but I don't think Dutchman is one of them. A quick visual check to tell is if the slides have an alum track on the upper and lower sides of the slide that you can see when slide is extended. Make sure you get hyd landing gear also...front support legs that hold RV while its disconnected from your truck. Of course 6-point level up is nice too but not required.

That is something I never thought of....my old passport had 2 electric slides. I never even knew there was another option

I haven't read about these issues. Guess it'll be time to dig a little further. It's a moving house...so it would seem there will always be something. But who knows

I personally would try and stay with one that has both main slides run by hydraulic instead of electric.

That's one I haven't seen yet. We have been considering the Voltage but I have read about a lot of issues with them (screw heads popping off, slide-out issues, things like that).

As for towing, our Ram 3500 will handle it without issue.

The last half of this post is just about identical to my problem.
The pin weight and overall weight was the deciding factor for me. I too put airbags on my previous truck and the Voltage was just too much for that truck.

GCWR on the truck is 33K lbs. and the bigger brakes and wheels/tires do a great job. On the scale the pin weight was calculated to be 3720 lbs unloaded! That would be a lot of weight for a 3/4 ton truck, and was too much for my old F-350 SRW, even wit the airbags. Just putting out there what numbers I have been seeing.

Hey Tom. I just bought a Voltage 3895 that is a little over 16k# empty and grosses at 19K#. I had a SRW Dodge 1 ton diesel I had to replace after the first camping trip. The old Dodge was rated at 16K# for trailer weight.
I went with a RAM 3500 Mega Cab with the AISIN transmission and 4.10 gears. I didn't want to have any issues with pulling hills, stopping, starting, curves, etc. I'm rated for 37,500 gross combined with this truck. GTW is around 28K# with a gooseneck, 25K# with a fifthwheel. A lot more capacity than I'll need. I pay a little in lower fuel mileage with the gearing but I am very comfortable towing with it.
Your camper is probably somewhere near mine in weight and capacities.
I probably could have gotten away with 3.73 gears or the 68RFE tranny(~23K# GTW) but I have a curvy driveway with a 22* slope to it. Blowing a tranny wasn't in my plans.
I spent a lot of time thinking about the weights and capacities of the truck and decided on overkill vs. just enough.
