when we turn on our AC it takes about four to five hours for it to cool down. Once it cools its cold. Is this normal for it to take so long or do I need to have the AC repaired. Memphis, TN

Thermal mass.

I would use a thermometer to check the temp output of your a/c.
This would probably answer your question.

X'lnt answer!

Easy solution!..:C

The AC thermometer is avail at any parts store.
Looks like a miniature meat thermometer.
You put it in the AC outlet vent/s.
About $5 or less.

Check to see if it's putting out cold (how cold?) air.

AS noted, you not only have to cool the air in the box, but the walls, furniture, floors and ceilings. DO you have one or two A/C units?

After the unit has run on high for about 10 minutes, get an air out let reading as close to the unit outlet as possible, Next get an ait inlet temperature at the inlet grill. DO NOT use an infrared (laser) temp gun as it senses the the temperature of the plastic or metal grill. Use a thermometer.

The outlet air should be 18 to 20 degF lower than the inlet if the unit is working correctly.

Make sure the evaporator coil and filters are clean first.

If the unit has a "chill grill", open it and work on cooling the mainarea first.

In the summer, it can take several hours to make much head way against a hot trailer.

Does the air feel cold a few minutes after you turn the ac on? If you have a large camper, you may need another unit to cool it down faster. We have a second ac in the bedroom.

Our eight year old Coleman a/c started taking a long time to cool last year. Then it started icing up with the compressor running non-stop. By the end of the year we had to replace it. $1100 later and we're back to cooling off pretty quickly.

If it eventually cools down and stays cool, it sounds like you have only one unit and as others have said, really need two. We have two in our 35' Jayco and it takes an hour or so before it cools off enough to be comfortable in 90+ weather.

A few thing to consider, is this the only ac in the FW, and the ac will usually only bring the temp down about 20ยฐ. If the inside is real hot it will take a while for the temp to come down. All the furniture and walls are holding that heat. Do you notice the temperature dropping gradually over the 4-5 hours?

I would say something isn't right there unless you're in very hot weather. A couple of years ago we traveled all day in low 100 degree temps. Took our unit a while, but it was noticeably cooler within a couple of hours, iirc.

Install covers over your roof vents and keep them open while you're driving, this will help exhaust the heat. Once at the camp sight leave the vents open for a hour or so to help let the warm air at the ceiling escape while the A/C cools off the trailer.

After a long drive on a very hot day ours (35' Montana) can take that long. But normally much quicker.

Well first if a problem it's not a Jayco problem.

More info needed;

Where are you?

Is this a new problem?

What are the outside temps before you turn on the A/C?

Could be a simple answer or it could be an A/C problem.
