Always have His angels watching over me and this time I had one riding on my shoulder. Was headed to Ozark, Arkansas when my wife spotted this on the rear, passenger side of our "5th". Was on the inside of the tire so it was just luck she spotted it. I would have been very unhappy had it let go, at speed. We were at the Choctaw Travel Center in McAlister, OK when it was discovered and it took less then an hour to get Roadside Assistance out there and get it changed. Very lucky and well blessed, in my opinion.

Yeah over the years of traveling I've seen a number of buggered up rigs due to tire failure at hwy speed. One in BC tore up good size area of the trailer. Another tore up the fender and some trailer in front and behind the duals on the toy hauler. Also took out his plumbed in propane line located a couple feed ahead of the failed tire. Use to power his gas grill. Hope he had the propane shut off or there went a tank of propane.

Bottom line tire monitors are your friend and you can't inspect the rubber and rims enough to insure a lower chance of failure.

Several decades ago I was traveling between TOK, AK and Dawson City, YT via the Top of the World Hwy. Came across 3 rigs with flats due to a section of road at the time that was constructed of sharp edged, large shot rock. Stopped and everyone at each rig was fine and had a spare and tools to change the destroyed tire. Last summer we traveled the same road towing our previous 5er and needed to lock the hubs in and shift into 4H as we were slogging in half a foot of slick mud.

As for tire age. I change all mine on all my vehicles every 5-6 years. Seldom is the tread gone just a matter of safety.

Took one of the truck tires down for a flat fix yesterday. Had a slow leak I could not find for some time. Shop had to take it off the rim to find the tire bead was breaking down. Tire was only 8 years old. Anyway I ordered 4 new to be on next week or so.

Old was GY Wrangler Silent Armor
New will be the Wrangler All Terrain

Curious how the LT-E will compare to the previous LT-C
I usually run 45/50 psi and expect to continue same.

My philosophy is that when one of these tires blows, the other three are not far behind. Best to replace all four ASAP.

I also am now running Sailuns; now I don't worry.

see when the RR tire blew it puts the trailer weight on the RF, this causes the RF tire too much stress on its inner belts.. then a day or 2 of driving total separation of the belts in the tire..happened 3 times to me on separate vacation trips..it was a running joke of how many tires would we buy on the vacation trip- until the Sailun tires I bought this year for our Rockies Trip, no tire issues...

I seriously thought about having aluminum diamond plate boxes built for my wheel wells for just this reason.

If they were to spend the money on that, they should just install proper tires to begin with . It is ALL ABOUT the $$$$$$

LOL That was my next piece of advise, but did not want to start the "Tire Wars".. Sailun Tires. We are on our 2nd set 6+ yrs.

Yes I was lucky. This blowout of the RF Goodyear Marathon happened just east of Burlington, NC on I-85 N while traveling @ 60 MPH. We were on our way to pick up a new spare due to a blowout of the RR Marathon 2 days earlier. The damage was about $3K as well and Goodyear paid for the repair. Instead of a TPMS, I invested in 14 ply Sailun S637 tires. Being paranoid about a blowout takes the enjoyment out of the trip.

I have a friend with a connection to the Goodyear quality people. I was told the new Endurance line of trailer tires was designed to lessen the blowouts that shred your trailer. Something about a belt wrap under the tread. Guess time will tell.

Wow You are very lucky !! that could have caused a major problem !! Not only to your unit, but could have caused you to loose control and hit either someone else or something else. We had a blow out similar to that a few years back and caused us $ 3,000.00 worth of damage to our unit. You might want to invest is a TPMS unit to possibly prevent something like that in the future.
