Michelin Ribs Bad Tires for a Trailer????

cruz-in

Hi All,

On another forum I participate in a poster is claiming:

1) Steel Carcass tires (like the Michelin Ribs) are "bad trailer tires"
2) "The flex/stress put on the trailer tires with steel casements can lead to sidewall failures."
3)"The steel sidewalls are also much more dependent on proper inflation. If the tires are run on low pressure, the steel flexing in the sidewall will fail. It is especially dangerous when you add air to a steel-sidewall tire that has been subjected to the flexing, and it blows out in front of you."

I have never heard this argument before...and I have read lots about tires....You all's thoughts on these claims?

I have the R-250'S and they have been EXCELLENT . I run Michelins on my truck but went with the R-250's to save a few bucks and have no regrets. Either tire is a great choice.

Strange. I get wmail's about new posts, but find no new posts. Mod's are you deleting stuff so quickly that most member don't even get a chance to view the posts before they get blasted to smithereens for contravening rules? If so why simply not close the thread?

You have a very heavy 35' Kountry Star that you were using G614 tire at 3750 lbs capacity. You then replaced them with a set of 3042 lb rated XPS Ribs knowing your trailer had right at 12000 lbs on the axles. You ran them for 5 years and 16000 miles and now are complaining because one tire has a bubble on the sidewall and saying their not right for a FW !!! :S

Agree with JIMNLIN, sounds like buc1980 should have had G rated tires and not E rated tires on his 5er.....it has been pretty consistent in here that the E rated XPS RIB be used within their recommended weight limits, a max of 6,000# axles, ( though some who run 3 axle 5er's are able to use them in that application, if again, axles are rated at 6,000#)....I was HIGHLY tempted to put the RIBS on my 5er when I first purchased it back in 07'...I got rid of an 04' Coachmen Somerset that I had put the RIBS on (6,000# rated axles), BUT, tires on the HR are "G" rated tires, 7,000# weight rated axles, so I bid "adieu" to the RIBS and stayed with G rated tires due to the weight of the HR.

Having experience with both now, I think the R250 is the better of the two. Price, sidewall protectors, and tread, gives the R250 the edge.

Why are they not right for your 5er?

On edit; Too much RV for the tire????

$'s to donuts that guy is a tire co. troll. Michelin Ribs are, by what I've read here (and elsewhere) the best you can get for their weight range. The near-twin Duravis R250's are a close second.

I've had Ribs on two 5ers. Not one problem with them. Wouldn't have anything else.

I think you would have a hard time finding a better trailer tire in their weight capacity, they are very good for 6k Axles
