Help??

I am in the process of upgrading my 2011 F250 gas 6.2L

We are thinking of getting a 5er and I want to make sure my truck will haul it comfortably. I am basing my 5er weight on 13000-13500lbs loaded. (11000-12000 dry)

I am looking at a 2016 Ram 2500 SRW 4x4 Diesel

All the numbers look good, except the payload.

It is listed as 2210lbs, Unless I am completely missing something (which could very well be the case), this will be the limiting factor.

If I assume 20-25% pin weight, then I will automatically be over payload once I put the DW and 2 kids in the truck. Is this true?

I feel that there is something I am not seeing and it is frustrating me.

Can some one point out what I am missing?

Note: I have also looked at the 2016 F250, and GMC/Chevy, but the Ram still has better overall numbers. But would still consider any of the bid 3, if the numbers worked out.

Looking forward to getting educated from the group on this topic.

Cheers,

Ryan

Pulled the 5vr in my signature for two years with a 2500 D/A, no real issues but most trips were around 100 miles round trip. Upgraded to the 1 ton as I didn't feel good towing 2000 miles one way to the east coast, BIG DIFFERENCE! Still the same drive train but when pulling a 5vr right around 15,000# and a pin weight around 3000# loaded for bear, no doubt, 1 ton is the way to go. Especially with the minimal price difference. Love the engine brake and Allison of the GM line but all 3 have good and bad. As for the "CP4 issue", who cares, extended warranty baby!

We have a 2015 Ram dually 2 x 4 Laramie with the Aisan transmission, 4:10 rear end, puck system, and B&W hitch. It is a towing machine and since we are full timers (8 years) we like the ride of a big pick up and the inside is very nicely appointed. Only disadvantage with a dually is parking in parking lots/garages. Did I mention that it is a towing machine? Understand that a dually is not the best option for everyone and that any of the big three manufacturers have great trucks.

I traded my 2500 HD Chevy with 2,700# payload and got a 3500 RAM with 4070# payload. It made a world of difference pulling my FW.

I just traded my '13 ram 2500 cc short bed for a '16 ram 3500 cc short bed. The way it handles my fw camper is substantial. Same cost, same size, same look, way better payload, and tows like a maniac. That dang 2500 was my favorite teuck, but that payload number bruises a guy that likes heavy toys.

All in all the 2500 can do the work safely, but its better, easier, and smoother with the 3500.

Yep, as stated above, the 2500 ratings are limited. If you are buying new, go for the 3500. Many of us that already have the 2500 use the axle rating. Learned this many years ago as a renegade on the TC forum pages here. Talk about "overloaded"! Spring packs, air bags, 19.5 wheels were the name of the game to get close axle rating with 3000 pounds in the bed!

Forget the 2500. Go straight for the 3500. No reason not to. Same with the F250 versus F350.

Here is video that is put out by the RVSEF (RV Safety and Education Foundation) explain how to match you truck to the RV and safe towing. It explains the most common terms and how they relate to each other.

my 15 2500 weight no trailer rear axle 3440 axle rating 6500 still have 3100 to use with trailer rear 5100

My older '03 2500 Dodge/Cummins has a 6000 RAWR and weighs 2820 on the rear axle which leave my truck with around 3180 lb for a payload.
When hooked up with my 11200 lb 5th wheel trailer = around 5200-5400 on the rear axle = 600-800 lbs under max.

Some folks buy a 2500 Ram for pulling a RV trailer..... and some want to use the trucks GVWR payload based on the tire placard. Older trucks (prior to early/mid '00s) as my truck don't have a tire placard payload number.

If we bought the same 2500 for commercial service for pulling heavy trailers we look at the trucks RAWR numbers which most late model'14-'16 4x4 Rams may be 6500 RAWR. Trailers add little to no weight on a trucks front axle.

Went from a 2006 Ram 2500 to a 2016 Ram 3500 a couple of months ago. I don't like the coil springs they have put on the 2500. Talked to several people and they said pulling a fiver with the new 2500's was mushy at best.
If you get a new Ram, get the puck hitch system and a B&W hitch...sweeeet.
If it moves but shouldn't, use Duct Tape. If it doesn't move but should, use WD40.

I've really been kicking around going from a one ton gas to a 3/4 ton diesel. I know the numbers don't jive but look at the campgrounds. They're all 3/4 ton. I'm mostly considering because of ride quality when not loaded. I haven't pulled the trigger yet though.
