replacing tires, have 3 6000lb axles

New road warrior and out of the gate i want to get rid of the powerking tow max. the 415 when loaded is around 17500, ive got 3 6000 lb axles on it. 235/80r16 tires. I was confused about tire weight ratings. My normal travel doesnt take me more than 300 miles from home. ( we use it for a travel sofball team 10u girls....74wins-6losses right now but gotta brag)

Any way, i dont have an extra 2400 for the good year g614 right now. (Nothing like a good kidney stone to mess with your budget the day you pour money into a 5th wheel) I do want to go with a LT tire. Would the duravis or sailun not have the right load capacity? I think there is a bridgestone commercial ta tire as well.

i'll probably do the 614's in time late next year. Whats the best alternative? Just doing a tpms and keeping the china bomb.? I generally stay 60mph.

i have about $1100 to spend now, maybe a little more if the wife is happy this week

What would the masses do? LOL

Many wheels that come on 5th wheels with ST tires are rated to 80 psi., since that is the max pressure rating for E-rated ST tires. Some people want to change to a G-rated LT tire, for higher carrying capacity, which requires a higher pressure: 110 psi. for its maximum carrying capacity.

FJ,
Can you get LT's in a 16in wheel or does it have to go to 17in?

Thanks

Of course you can get LT's in a 16" wheel. That is what the majority of trucks came with for years.

After suffering a blowout on my 1/12 year old tires I upgraded to
Sailun S637 tires. a cheaper alternative to Goodyear. Remember the name. I have read of several forum members going with Sailun's. So far only positive reviews and no reports of blowouts.
Only time will tell if Sailun's are really a viable alternative,so for now I'll be the guinea pig.

Coming to a close on our 3rd full season, and pushing close to 10K miles on our Bombs. Tread appears to be about 40-50% and along with the sidewalls looks good. Unless the drastic happens sooner, I'll probably close out next season and then look for replacements.

Hi Rayford, I'll see if I can catch you up to speed with tires 101 lol.

LT= Light truck tire
ST= Special Trailer tire
TPMS= Tire Pressure Monitoring System (I think that's right)
Most trailer's being sold are being sold with ST tires manufactured overseas (bigger profit margin) American made tires are mucho dinero!

thanks for the quick lesson!

If it's a brand new trailer and tires, I'd ride the china bombs and save the extra $$$$ as fast as I can. I think the China Bomb thing is over blown and would not replace brand new tires made in China. Take care of them, check your air pressures each trip, dont over load or speed and replace them next Spring/Summer rather than waste the $1000 now.

Riding my China bombs for my second season and WILL replace this spring but I'd have a hard time justifying wasting a thousand $ to replace new tires.

I keep my TH at Glamis dunes storage during season. When I get there one of the first things I do,is check tires/adjust tire pressure, only then do I pull out and go to Gecko road about 7-8 miles from Glamis Dunes storage.

Well, in my case, it took about 12 miles max, not overloaded or speeding, to go from china bombs looking perfect brand new, to 2 china bombs with tread separating and coming off in chunks. If my buddy didn't point it out to me when we were camped at the end of Gecko at Roadrunner, I wouldn't have believed that they could come apart so fast. Seems to me, when they decide to go, not always much of a warning, if any. If I had gone to PHX 200 miles, instead of Roadrunner 12miles, those china bombs tires would have been land mines.

I have the 415 RW as well.....went through the rationalization of spending +$2k to replace brand new tires, and, I waited too late.

Had my BlowMax blow yesterday. 5 months old. Checked TP, pulled out and it let loose 15 miles down the road. It did damage too.

Get the Goodyear's or wish you did later....and later in my case was 5 months.

Sorry to hear about your problems, but you have no idea how many times I read or hear "I waited till it was too late".

People try and save a buck up front, but it sometimes ends up costing you more in the long run.

Agreed
I am still "kicking myself" for not going to LT's much sooner, the money spent on replacing those ST's every 18 months cost way more then a new set of rims.

Tires are like BEER. Everyone has a favorite. A thousand dollars won't touch a good set of tires like the one poster mentioned. Discount Tire and Michelin XPS Ribs. Interest free for a year. On my second set. Trouble free for thousands of miles. I always buy the spare also.

Check out the Firestone Transforce HT. It is a very good tire for a trailer, and with a 3042 Lb. weight rating, all six could carry the RV, including the hitch weight, with a margin to spare so there is no way they would ever be overloaded. Cost wise, they are very competitive, so this one purchase now will carry you for many years to come.

I just finished replacing all 6 of ours with TransForce HTs. They can be had for approx. $100ea OTD with a little negotiating... We are happy with them after one trip across country and back. If they let you get road hazard, go for it! If I would have paid for it, it would have saved me from having to buy another one when I rubbed the sidewall on something in Amarillo...
