Thinking about a Toy Hauler, but not for toys

We've been RVing in a 5th wheel bunkhouse for 4 years. A two-bunk model that Jayco doesn't even make anymore 29.5bhs Superlite. It's great but our son is growing out of the small bunk room pretty quick.

We can make do, but have been thinking about what a toy hauler would be like. We only have one kid, who is 14 and will probably be a 6 footer before he's 18, and two dogs (medium sized). We would love to get out of the bunk room styles, but want to keep him in a bedroom. I came up with the idea of a toy hauler since many of them seem to have larger beds in the back room and we could certainly put the back room to use with our grill, wood, bicycles and everything we try to cram into our truck bed. We camp with a lot of friends and I'm sure they will have items they would love to transport in the "toy room". So, anyway, no real toys right now, but I think we could put a toy hauler to good use.

Since we don't really live the toy hauler lifestyle of going out for the purpose of lots of other activities, we do like a nice interior as we do a lot of cool/cold weather trips and like to hang out with friends inside sometimes. Kitchen and living space are important. I'm thinking that finding a really nice upgraded used toy hauler instead of buying new (which I'm sure we couldn't afford) would be the way to go. We pull with a Ford F-250.

Does anyone out there use a toy hauler for purposes like what I'm describing? Just curious to see if this idea has been tried out before and what you think about that.

We also use ours for a kayak and bikes otherwise in the spring and the fall it is a wonderful place to let the ramp out level like a deck while backed up to a lake or river and enjoy coffee or tea in the mornings and with railings it is a good place to keep the dog confined also. We also have a portable table and extra dorm type of fridge with frezzer to use for meals when the weather is nice. Only thing I miss is some models have a sliding glass door to enjoy the view from the inside as our previous one was a rear living. I have plans to put in a window to solve that for my KZ 37k. Look for one with three slides as it does make a difference. The interiorof ours is about the same as the 27 foot 5th wheel we had previously. There are little thing that we had but I have added due to the interior being a little smaller such a shelf at both sides of the bed, an fold out extension to the kitchen counter ect... We would purchase another toy hauler again just for the two of us.

We have a PUMA use the garage to haul the golf car (sometimes)...... Has two queen size beds that drop down...... Use the garage for sons bedroom.....extra anything room, .....dogs room..... extra sitting room ......

Son has his privacy .....TV....... Keep a small frig, air compressor, tools etc........

Very versatile..............

I have a Jayco fifth wheel toyhauler and wouldn't trade it for any other type of RV. You can turn the garage into anything you want. And being able to haul just about anything is fantastic. I only haul kayaks in mine so it's never super heavy. I love the tall ceilings throughout the trailer, tons of room, and storage. The garage is nice also when you need a seperate bedroom and some have a second bathroom.

Thanks so much! That's exactly how I imagined using it, and it's good to know that it works. I'm just really unfamiliar with Toy Haulers, but I guess they are not that much different. 🙂

We bought our Fuzion to use the garage as a bedroom. We have a golf cart that goes with us 50% of the time, but mostly we just enjoy the extra space. The kids like having their own space with their own TV and A/C. It is also handy to carry bicycles, coolers, chairs, etc. Everybody has their own likes and dislikes, but I much prefer the versatility of a toyhauler to a bunkhouse with its small, uncomfortable beds.

That is why we went with the TH. We haul bikes, beach things & outside games but it also serves as my 17 year olds daughter room for her & her friends.
They have there own big beds, TV, radio....by themselves.

Funny thing we have a golf cart but never bring it with us, always ride our bikes or walk.

I pull my Fuzion with my Chevy 2500 and never have had a problem.

Hi Karen, basically we do as you do.....we do have a few toys, ie. bikes & kayacks that we take along. We have friends who camp with us and sleep in tents - however when the weather is bad - guess where they crash! We hav the HappyJack bed/couch system back there!

DH has as a large roll around tool box in the garage area, and we have a small dorm size frig....we use the rear door (not the garage door) - so any dirt, mud, etc. stays in the garage area!

I don't think you will be disappointed - just watch the tongue weight - if you go with a tow behind.....
