Thought about switching to a motorhome

Decided that maybe now that I am getting a bit older I would try a motorhome. Have had a 5th wheel for 20 plus years and just thought a class C or a short class A would be a nice change. Have spent time on line and at dealers shopping and have found some very nice units. What I have discovered is none of them seem to have a comfortable chair where I can sit and enjoy my coffee with a place to set the cup read and watch tv. Would have to sit at the dinette and I would miss my recliner and end table my fiver has. Will save some money and just continue to enjoy the comfort of my fiver.

they tell me to buy bigger than what u think u need,and keep the throne saperate from the shower, the rest is up to u . now its all happy-camping

If money were no object we'd have a Newell. But, it is, and we found the cost of maintenance and service on the diesel pusher we had for 7 years was increasing, plus no one in our area would work on it. It made much better financial sense to go back to a fifth wheel. As far as comfort, going down the road was much better for the wife as she could get up and move around. My comfort level is better with the fifth wheel because it behaves better on the road. We do find our 35' triple slide fiver is more roomy than the 39' triple slide dp we had. Basically, it is a matter of preference and what fits your lifestyle and pocketbook the best.

Same here: We have a TH, we do 90% camping without the toys. We started to look at a larger 5th but all those slides get real heavy. Then we need a new truck. $50k truck, $50k camper? There are some really nice used MH out there in that price range and only one unit to maintain.....

Ugh, we're going through this too. We prefer the space and layout options of a fifthwheel, but the advantage of accessing the kitchen & potty of a MH. There are some nice looking RV resorts that are Class A only, and that's making me consider Class As. Ultimately I don't think we'll go that route. When it comes right down to it, the fifth wheel just makes more sense. For us

...I also question the "moving around a lot" difference when comparing the two RV types. I will grant that if you are motor homing without a "towed" the changing of campgrounds is likely easier than with a fiver...if you have to hook up the towed, I see no real advantage over hooking up the fiver...one still needs to break camp, retract levelers and disconnect services...I can hook my fiver to my truck just a quickly as I used to hook my Grand Cherokee to my Beaver diesel pusher...

Living space while on site, no comparison...the fiver has a much more home like feel...motor home always was a bit more tunnel like...JMO...YMMV

We have been having this very same discussion too. The comfortable 5th wheel is great, on the road if you move around a lot the mo ho has the advantage. Perhaps the bottom line is that spending the extra money for a mo ho would hinder the ability to travel as much.
It actually boils down to a personal preference.

Going through this myself.
I LOVE my 5th wheel but the wife hates to drive my truck, with or without the rig.
The youngest is going off to college and empty nest is already getting to my wife. She wants to be able to take off on her own if I'm at work and go spend the weekend with the daughter.
So we have been looking around at different layouts and classes.
It will be a bit before we change but it will happen so I am reading every comment with interest.

Maintenance?
I get the oil and filter changed every spring, and lube what needs to be lubed. I get the propane and water filled as needed, and dump the holding tanks as needed.

a fifth wheel should have the wheel bearings packed and the brakes inspected annually. The propane and water should be filled as needed, and the holding tanks dumped as needed.
We lived in a 32 foot triple slide fiver for a little over two years, moving every 13 weeks. It was great to live in, and having a one ton dually for a daily driver was no big deal.
However, I like the 32 foot single slide Class A MoHo much better. Having the PT or the Jeep for a daily driver is wonderful. true, there seems to be a little less actual living space in the MoHo, but it isn't all that bad.
I like the motorhome.

Speaking as someone who was stuck for hours in traffic during a N Georgia snowstorm, towing the 5er which was winterized for our trip back home.... the ability to use the potty (or get a beverage or snack) in a traffic snarl is priceless! I keep waiting for someone to post on RV.net "We were stuck in traffic, and this old lady gets out of the truck, leaves the door open, faces the back of the truck - and I know what she was doing!!"

Right THEN - I was wishing we were driving our Class C.....

I agree with Dick... And don't forget the maintenance that comes with a class A or C we had a T.T. switched to class A, and now back to T.T. But like everything else is all about you preference and budget..

I have owned both...four motor homes from a C to a Diesel Pusher...and a slide in truck camper...now have a fiver and do not see returning to a motor home any time soon...Much more comfortable to actually live in for extended stays...

I enjoyed the motor homes at the time...it made traveling with kids easier...and their need to eat or use a restroom...not a big deal now with just Deb and I traveling...JMO...YMMV

Before you make that investment? try renting a Class C and see how you like it.

My drivers and passenger seat both swivel 180. I have a small table that I put between my drivers seat and couch. However, it is just preference. I liked the 5ver I had several years ago. For me it was a pita finding parking in shopping centers, use of rest room on the road. Plus I like zipping around to sight see in my jeep.

I have a good friend (another Bob) that we have traveled with for many years, but his 28' 5er has gotten to be too much for him at 80 years old. He has finally admitted that he needs a change for probably a small A or C, with a fixed walk-around bed.

A great place to read and have a cup of coffee would also be very important for him.
