What truck to tow my tow hauler?

So have a 2011 Ford F150 with the ecoboost V-6 engine that is supposed to tow 11,500 LBS. It does but wont pull at elevation and high temps without overheating. Ford has no fix for this problem as of yet and has been working on this for the past year. So im in the market for a newer truck. I will only be using the truck to tow my 22' toy hauler. the hauler weighs 5200 dry and probably 9000lbs at the most if its fully loaded. My ford is all over the road when its windy. My buddy towed my camper with his Dodge 3500 and I couldnt even tell it was back there. Im open to all suggestion about a new truck. Diesel or gas? Dodge 1500 or 2500, Ford 250 gas or diesel? Chevy 2500 gas or diesel?

Well, that isn't a toy hauler is it? This is a toy hauler section, so that is what we are talking about.

Is this the same guy that you said blows XPS Rib tires in another post???? 30K on that trailer, yeah, E rated tires are WAYYYYYY overloaded if that is the case. :S

My new truck doesn't know what a hill is.
My buddy has a 2008 F450 with the 4.88 gears and towing a big hauler like mine. He says my truck will out tow his.

Since 2011 Superduties came out, you don't need a F450 anymore.
F350 will handle any big toy hauler out there.

The only difference between newer F450's and F350's is 3000lbs more in GCWR. GVWR is the same between both trucks.

I have a payment, but I also know I am within all of the tow ratings of my truck. ๐Ÿ™‚ That is important to me.

linster and 64thunderbolt. Thank you for your insight. linster, I you are right. We might have to go the route of 64thunderbolt for a while until we find what we really want. Looking a F550's would love a Topkick or Kodiac but haven't found any around this area to check out.

My truck tows very well. Some new ones will do better but mine has been paid for since the day I bought it.

If you go the 550 or the others you mentioned will the drivetrain keep up with the added wgt? An F450 would do just fine. A friend has an F450 with 4.88's and won't break any speed records but doesn't know what a hill is. It's a 6.4 with a 200 hp tow tune.

I'm looking for some of you with really big TH's and what you are using to tow. We have a 40 ft. All American Sport 15K dry weight. We have a 1999 F350 dually diesel. We had a little transmission over heating problem a few weeks ago. We've been told the truck is big enough and told we need a bigger truck. Anybody beef up the tranny or add airbags to the rear suspension? Any experience and knowledge would be great!

I tow my 41' Weekend Warrior with a 2012 F350 Dually.
My GCWR is 30,000lbs. Fully loaded, I am at 27,000lbs going down the road.

You need more truck. GCWR on your truck is 20,000 lbs. Truck probably weighs around 8000lbs. So unless your trailer is 12000lbs going down the road, you are over your GCWR.

My F350 is fine with that wgt. The air bags were the best investment. More stable, MUCH better ride & easier to hook & drop.

Add a trucool cooler and a JW or BTS valvebody to your trans and it will live.

fergie1111,
Any of the big-3 trucks will do the job quite well for you. I am partial to Ford, but would recommend looking around your Dodge dealers for any leftover 2012 models. The reason being is this was the last of big-3 three that did not have the DEF tank. DEF stands for "diesel emissions fluid" and it is an additional fluid (urea) that has to be added at oil changes per emission regulations. It is not a huge deal, but it is one more thing to pay for and monitor over the life of ownership.

I would add an additional oil cooler on the truck. Otherwise, I think you are fine.

Yes, our F350 does have a transmission cooler. Just upgraded it (they said when the transmission was replaced a few years ago they should have upgraded then but didn't). Somebody also suggested adding another cooler.

Hate to buy a new pick up when this one is paid off. We like those words "paid off".
