I ran across a full timer with a domicile on SD. In his blog he stated he worked a few months in KY for Amazon and will have to file KY state income tax so he sez that gives him the right to apply for KYnect ACA for Kentucky.
I wrote to him and explained he can only have one domicile at a time. He just wont listen to me and sez nothing sez he can't sign up in KY and that he used to be a CPA. I sent him the Escapees PDF How to become a Real Texan

This is misleading -- it sounds like you have to use doctors and health facilities in your state.

It depends on the health plan and provider you select. Some only have in-state networks, others are nationwide.

Many full-timers are old enough to be on Medicare which is totally unaffected by ACA. We have a Medicare supplement we can use anywhere in the US.

But not everyone...:B

Bingo! Not everyone is on Medicare. I've been doing a lot of research into this and have found very few policies with national networks. And they are pricy. One company does have a national network...BUT requires a PCP. If you travel a lot...or FT you have a problem. The "cheaper" pol's are HMO's.

Sorry about the hi jack... seems related though. As the OP said.. what part of domicile is this guy missing? Just because you work in a state and pay taxes to it doesn't give you residency. People work across state lines all the time. Pro sports teams work across state lines and yet have no residency in every state.

OP you might try the pro sports analogy and see if that doesn't jar something loose. CPA? Gotta wonder.

I just got this from the blogger who sez...
I don't want to be a Texan. I want good health insurance, and I'm gonna get it.
I wrote back: Wanting to be a Texan has nothing to do with anything... It just explains why you can only have one state as your domicile. What do you not understand about this statement?
If you are newly full-timing and in your wallet you can find references to more than one state, e.g., driver license from state A, vehicle registration from state B, mailing address in state C, insurance in state D, voter registration in state E, etc., you have a problem that should be addressed immediately.
Penalties and fines levied by states are so onerous that no one should even consider attempting to use several states for their individual benefits. The highest judgment heard about to date: $123,000 plus two years of community service.
Two years of community service puts a crimp in the full-timing lifestyle

And what happens when you file your first claim, when they find out you lied about your domicile.
I understand that you want good health Ins. We all want that, but the way you are trying to do it is illegal.
If you are in denial, on how to do that, go for it, but it will come back to haunt you.
Why don't you check the ACA for your legal domicile in SD.

ACA is going to cause a lot of headaches and stress for full time travelers.

All healthcare purchased will be based on your legal physical address with health care being administered within your resident state.

Have yet to see how FT'rs will be able to get health care outside of state.....except for 'emergency services'

Yes the blogger has to pay state income taxes on monies earned within any state that has a state income tax......plus file his Federal via SD as 'domicile'
But paying taxes on monies earned in another state dose NOT qualify him for ACA via that state. It's based on his legal address....in his case SD.
Is it time for your medication or mine?

You are right that you can only have one domicile, but he WILL have to pay income tax in the state it is earned in. Federal tax in SD, state tax in KY (or wherever you earn the money).

I don't know about the aca issue.
