Actual Gas Mileage

I just did a 244 mile trip with my 37' gasser powered by a Ford V10. After a refuel I was able to calculate my mileage at 9.04 MPG. That is 2 MPG better than what I expected and 3 MPG better than my last coach.

Yes I know 9 MPG is no smart car BUT I have to say I am elated with this. That is 33% greater than what I expected. 33% will be HUGE when we do our 4000 mile trip next year.

Several years ago, I took my DP into a CAT shop for some minor problems and they checked my downloads and printed out the vehicle info from the computer. It was very interesting as it showed the top speed it had ever gone,115 at Freightliner, showed the idle times, running time and total engine time. The amazing thing was that it showed the MPG, Overall, idleing and in gear. For the life of the MH,it had goten 7.1 total and 7.5 on the road.
Your motorhome went 115 miles per hour? I'd like to see that.
This doesn't surprise me at all. When I downloaded my data, I noticed my top speed was 95 MPH at the 4 mile mark. I thought that was strange till I realized it was on a Dyno at Spartan during the first few miles.

What kind of mileage did it get at 95?:B:)
You can bring it down and blow the carbon out as they use to say on 130 between Austin and San Antonio the speed limit is 85 with a 10 mph cushion 95 is doable. Just remember you may only have tiers speed rated to 75. I know it was a dyno but.....:B
I think it's safe to assume it was doing zero MPG at 95 MPH. 😉 I would be scared to death to do 95 mph in any motorhome.

I don't even check mine, never did. The previous owner said around 6, so I left it at that. I didn't buy if for fuel economy although if I were to get 4mpg I would sell it

3 Class A's so far.
2005 310Hp V-10 was 9.1mpg 17k lbs, driving 50-55 mph pulling motorcycle. 25k mile avg.
2011 362hp V-10 was 7.9mpg 22k lbs, driving 50-60, pulling motorcycle, 12k mile avg.
2015 380Hp Cummins Diesel 9.0 mpg pulling car, 35k lbs. 55-65mph, and less driving per day (due to increased speeds and hill climbing ability)
Got passed by a "A" gasser pulling a car in hills, I was going 75mph on my motorcycle, RV 4-5 mpg?

Another thing to look at is at what octane are you at. In the west and southwest with our REAL mountains, it is not uncommon for regular unleaded to be only 85 octane instead of the standard 87 octane.

The fuel gauge tells you that you have a lot of gas, some gas and no gas. Full lasts for about 1/2 the tank! Know your MPG and how far you've gone, plan accordingly.

on my Ford V10 Thor Axis (1 year old) I drive 70 on the Freeway if possible and get about 9mpg right now. Question I have is for this engine have people seen the mileage go up much after awhile? I only have 4k miles thus far.

One thing I noticed is I always seem to be getting good mileage with the top half of the fuel tank and then once the gauge shows half full, seems to go down much more quickly. Half on the gauge is not quite half in the tank!

That's what the guy at CAT said also. They run them up all the way on a dyno.

If you really want to capture accurate mpg, use GPS or limited access highway mile markers to compare your odometer to "real world miles". IE, run 50 actual miles and compare the odometer - if 49 or 51 miles from the dashboard, you have a 2% error already.

Ha ha! In June we drove from Colorado to Alexandria, LA. Our TOAD's gas light was on and when we got to our destination I didn't fill up, drove 4 miles, then we came home. The gas light was still on. I figured the Jeep got appox 2,267 miles per gallon on our last trip.

I am always amazed at the people that claim to get 9-10 mpg in a 20k lb motor home with a Ford V10. I have over 34k miles and have a life average of 6.492 and a current tank of 7.596. On rare occasion I get this higher number, I think I know why, I fill up AFTER I get out of the mountains and am on the way home. The mountainous portion of the trip is in the previous tank, 6.492.

I own a couple service truck with the same engine that weigh in about half my MH, they only bet about 9.5 on a good day!.

Keeping this record is fairly easy, even without excel, however with it you can easily calculate current, 4 tank, 10 tank and lifetime mpg as well as cost per mile, and keep track of all your service. get really carried away and you can even link to your RV log book where you keep track of all of your trips.

here are the headers I use in my spreadsheet, they are separated by (,) commas:
Date,Start,Finish, Gallons this tank,Fuel Cost,Current MPG,Miles, driven this tank,Aver MPG to date,Current $/Mile,Overall $/Mile ,Total Gallons,Total Miles Driven,Total Fuel Cost, Odometer Mileage @ Event,Trip Notes,Mileage % gain/loss, Four tank average,Ten Tank Average,Cost/Gallon

Formulas are not all that hard. just leave only the Finish Mileage column, Gallons this tank and Fuel cost as well as the event and trip notes unprotected.

Quit checking ours after the first trip, just fill it up when it needs it. When figuring a trip, use 6 MPG, that's a lot closer on our 06 Pace Arrow, when pulling the liberty and running the generator.
