Anybody know of a home-made deoderizer to use in the black tank rather than a store bought one? We ran out whill dry camping and would like to see if there is a back-up.

Thanks for the responses. I found out what was the reason for black tank odor. The electric flush toilet in the rear bathroom was not leaving water in the stool and the odor was coming out of the stool, especialy when moving.

Lots of water and never use any chemicals. Never any odor except right when flushing as it gets full. I would also never use bleach. Bleach used on a continuous basis will damage any seals (think valve seals, toilet bowl seal).

If you have black tank "odor" inside your mh.....something is wrong. Either your vent is plugged or the seal on your toilet is not sealing properly. If you experience the odor right after you flush, that is normal. Be sure to turn off the vent fan when doing this as it will pull the odors right out of the tank and up the toilet. If you have a small leak (drip) in any of your connections at the drain gate or sewer hose, will also cause an odor that can seep into the interior of the coach.

Adding chemicals to mask the odor is not solving the problem. A properly operating and sealed black tank system will NOT produce an odor under normal conditions.

Another fan of the Geo Method. Works very well.

Copied from the Geo Method (Charles Bruni). I would recommend the entire process when you're able, but this may address your current circumstance:

"Occasionally, I pour a half gallon of liquid bleach into each tank to deodorize, sanitize and disinfect them. I add the bleach when the tank is about half full, and then continue to use the tank normally until it is full and ready to dump. I no longer use the blue toilet chemical because it isn't necessary. I have no odors coming from my black water tank. The chlorine bleach kills the bacteria, which is primarily responsible for waste water tank odor. Generic brand liquid bleach is cheap and very effective."

Some use the Geo Method or something similar. It works for me.
Others use just water, nothing else.
