Agreed. Have made the trip a number of times. US 97 is one of the nicest highways I've been on both in terms of scenery and road condition. Mountain driving? Yep, you're in the northwest.

As a really nice alternative, SE from Lapine to Lakeview and 395 south from there. Although high desert plateau there is essentially only one pass just before Summer Lake. Nice quiet drive with very little traffic.
We go that way quite often when heading up to WA, always stop at Summer Lake Hot Springs for a nice refreshing dip in the pool. ๐Ÿ™‚

I second this route. Went this way many times in a car and truck, in July with the MH.
Hardly any traffic past Klamath Falls, nice and wide open.
When close to Susanville if you turn off on A3/Standish Buntingville Rd be careful due to narrow roads and low hanging trees.

me, I'd run down 101, cross the golden gate, turn left at the bay bridge, head thru yosemite, and left again on 395 to get there.

Done this many times. It is the shortest route and is interesting as well. Between Klamath and Susanville there is little traffic especially if you go thru Adin. Lava Beds Nat. Monument and the remains of a WWII internment camp at Tule Lake are just south of Klamath Falls.

Pretty hard to avoid mountains regardless of the route. I would suggest 97 to I-5 then 89, you are risking snow in the higher passes.

I don't see a 199 on that trip. 97 is a little mountainous.
