Reading the dipstick

We pulled the tranny pan today and put in a new filter and gasket. According to the manual it should hold 15.9 quarts. I have 8 in there right now and even though I let the tube rest I get weird readings. One side of the stick is dry, the other side wet and already showing excess oil. How much is retained in the converter and how the heck am I supposed to ready this? Yes I do it with engine running. It is a 98 E super duty.
Thanks

A Ford E4OD full tranny, lines and torque converter flush is actually quite easy. Simply removing the oil from the pan is not enough and typically only removes only a little over 1/3 of the oil. To do a near full fluid change with out wasting any new fluid, All you need to do is remove the fluid intake line from the rear of the tranny. An 11mm or 13mm open end wrench is all you'll need to remove the line. You can buy a 7 dollar fluid hand pump from Walmart or anywhere that comes with a 6" 1/2" clear plastic hose, usually 3 feet on either side of the pump. It will fit snugly over the intake line; hose clamp it if it feels loose, mine wasn't necessary. Place the other end of the hose into a container, the old 4-5 qt tranny fluid container will work. You might need to clamp the hose to the container if it doesn't sit securely. Once secure, start your engine then monitor the fluid being pumped out of the converter. You will need to run the engine for 1-2 minutes or until you see air mixing in with the old fluid being pumped out. Once you begin to see air, turn engine off. You should have pumped and additional 5-7 qts out. Next, let the sit for ten minutes then, with your $7 pump, pump out the remaining fluid from the lines. You may have to let it sit several times before the fluid drips down and becomes pump able again but after about 30 minutes of repeating this you will have recovered another 2 qts of old fluid. All told I was able to remove 14qts of the 15.8 qts of old fluid, including that of which I siphoned from the pan (really no need to change trans filter unless over 100k miles). Next reattach your trans intake line then fill your pan with 8qts, turn on engine and let it run for one minute then turn off and add another three qts. Turn engine on again then with brake on, shift through all the gears several times then add the remainder of your fluid. Only replace the exact amount of fluid that you removed. After running engine for 10 - 15 minutes, allow it to sit for several hours then check dipstick and add any fluid if needed but never overfill.

It all depends on what tranny he has. My E4OD takes almost 18 for a full flush. To correctly read the stick, warm the engine, park on a level surface and with the brakes applied run it up and down through the gears, stopping for several seconds at each one.

15+ quarts for a pan drop sounds like its way overfilled: linky

If you didn't, next time install a drain plug. Why they don't at the factory is a mystery to me.

Could someone confirm what a pan drain and fill takes for the '98?

Off the top, the 15.9 quarts sounds like a complete replacement of fluid including torque converter. Even 8 quarts sounds like a lot for a pan drain and fill......I'd be careful about driving it until I got some sure numbers on this.

Correct the 15.9 is for the complete transmission, converter, and coolers. you wont get near this amount out dropping the pan.

It seems like the basic issue here is reading the dip stick. There are a number of manufacturers out there whose oil and trans fluid dipsticks are very difficult to read. Who has the most successful dipstick modification that makes this an easy chore?

If you are in Walnut Creek then you could call Walnut Creek Ford and they should be able to tell you how much transmission fluid should be needed for a filter change. If you are traveling, I would think any Ford dealer should be able to answer your question about capacities. Future Ford in Concord has been helpful to me in the past for questions on the MH. And I agree that if the fluid was actually there both sides would be wet. JMO

To make your life a hole bunch easier...

just measure the old fluid you drained, then re-fill in that amount, then use your dip stick to get fluid at right level, if not already there.

That is what I thought too but was afraid maybe one side could be rubbed off coming up that long tube. I guess I will check again tomorrow and just keep adding. On a standard drain and fill what is a reasonable amount to put in? It is supposed to hold a lot more than the eight I put in.
