Tire Pressure Monitoring System for Toad

After 15 years of trouble-free Toad towing, the right front tire on my Toad went flat and completely shredded before a passerby alerted me to the tire issue. It must have been flat for a long time as it deeply marred the outside of the fender, knocked off the plastic housing on the driver's side mirror and damaged the wheel well. I had no indication of anything wrong while driving on mostly secondary roads for about a 2-hour period.
I see a few posts of TPMS for RV's but didn't note any for Toads.
Any recommendations for a good quality TPMS that will alert me in the future of Toad tire issues. I will be in the Cocoa and Jacksonville Florida areas for the next week or two.

I have the Tireminder TM66 with 13 valve stem sensors. 8 for the coach, and 5 on the Jeep. I can even install the sensors on my boat if towing that instead of the Jeep. There is a booster that I installed behind the engine cover in the back to assist the signal from what you are towing, and that comes standard with the TM66 I believe.

Wolfe does make a point, I bought a TM66 for my daughters 5th wheel with rubber stems, and she started loosing pressure in one of her tires. Didn't take long to figure out she only lost pressure over 50 mph so we knew it was the weight of the sensor on the stem. We changed them out for metal and all issues cured.

The TST standard sensors weigh less than a half ounce (13 grams), and are ok on standard rubber stems. The sensors can be made even lighter by removing the outer security shell. That also makes them even less obvious to anyone walking by. There are many "decorator" metal valve caps that weigh more than the TST sensors.

I have used a Tire Minder, it has worked fine for me. Went from a 38' with a toad to a 43' tag axle. Just bought two more transmitters. Easy.

Depends on the valve stem.

Example the valve stems on my Subaru Outback with factory internal TPMS are quite long and flexible. From my experience with the system I use on my truck and 5th wheel I doubt the Subaru valve stems would be able to handle a sensor without a lot of movement caused by the sensor.

A stout preferable metal valve stem is best.

I agree-- if the valve stem is not metal, whether because of internal TPMS or not, you shouldn't use an external mounted TPMS sensor.

A quick search found these metal stem sensors that say they are for Subaru's. Did not search for best price, just that there was such an animal.

we ended up with TST 507rv Tire Monitor System. Came with 6 sensors (we used these on the rig) and added 2 more for our tow dolly. As I recall the system is capable of monitoring up to 22 sensors. So far its worked great with no problem getting signal from the tow dolly sensors - plus we can "disconnect" them when not towing. We should probably add sensors to the rear tires of the car so we are totally covered...

We tow a 2011 Toyota RAV4 with factory TPMS, and have a 10 sensor TST model 507 TPMS installed in our coach with 4 of the sensors installed on the RAV4 valve stems and 6 sensors on the coach stems. The TST dash mounted display shows all 10 tire positions, and automatically sequences through each position with a pressure and temperature display. If any sensor reports an out of range value, an alarm sounds and a red LED flashes along with the tire position. The sensor batteries are user replaceable, last about a year, and cost about $1 each.

We had a tire get cut recently in Texas but the TPMS alerted me immediately. I'm sure where I was it would have been another 40-50 miles before I knew. At that moment any doubt of it's worth paid off. We have an EEzRV system with 10 sensors purchased from Amazon(6- RV, 4- toad). We are running it on our 33 foot gasser with no booster transmitter (to get the rear sensors to the front monitor) and towing a Mini Cooper Roadster (for length references). We have been on the road since last June and I've got spare batteries but not had to use them as of yet. We don't use the safety locks and just leave the sensors on the toad when driving around even though it has its own TPMS system.

YES.

They are totally independent of each other.

Any one of them should be fine. They don't care what the tires are on.

It's the same tire monitoring system as you'd have on your RV, just extra sensors to put on the Toad. Or if you only want them on the Toad, you just get the system with 4 sensors and then later, if you want to add to it for the RV, just do it.

I had the same thing happen where I had a front tire on my Jeep blow and I never knew it. I went about 10 miles before a passerby flagged me. Fortunately, it did no damage, not even to the rim. I think the tow bar and the three remaining wheels were enough to keep the Jeep balanced and the rim up enough to not even have damage to that. I know the distance, because on my way back a few hours later driving the Toad (I was dropping off my motorhome for some service) I saw my "road gators" laying on the freeway. I had not heard, anything, felt anything, and nothing was visible via the camera on the back the RV looking at the Jeep. That's when I got my first TPMS.

Frankly I have read good things about every system available. I went with the TST system because I looked at the site and saw the set up was super simple. Anyway I believe all the systems available will monitor the coach tires as well as toad providing you order enough sensors.
