Working on something ALL THE TIME

Now I am not complaining . I like to have things to do and most of the time I am working on the motorhome for preventitive maintenance items. Sometimes I seem to be overwhelmed and wonder if it is just me or is there something that needs to be fixed, improved, painted, waxed, cleaned, lubricated, ect. ect. all the time. I think I could go and work on something everyday and not run out of things to do. Maybe I am just a little overboard on keeping things in good order but when I see something that needs to be fixed or catch something before there is a problem I can not and will not ignore it for long. I seem to have something to work on after every camping trip.

In many cases, the time to deliver the rig to a shop, leave it, and return to get it, is as much or more than the time involved to DIY.

Plus, DIY the first time means you will be quicker the next time......

Not so. I travel all the time and repairs and maintenance are what I do once I drop anchor. Beats watching TV. BTW, I almost never have hookups.

For me maintaining the RV is the hobby within the hobby. I truly believe that if you aren't handy with tools and like fixing things, you'd best not buy any RV, unless you have so much money you don't mind paying someone else to fix everything.

Last year we had 2 breakdowns on the Interstate. This will not deter us from RVing and it is true you have to have a lot of money to keep an RV in top shape, but so would a second home and we prefer the more mobile life style while we still are able.

I had a cottage once. The only reason to buy a cottage is because you don't have enough work at home. The same might be said of a Motorhome.:)

Agree, to me it's a hobby. I spend more time on my new MH than I did on my old one simply maintaining and fixing so it doesn't end up like my first two MH's I bought used. We do use it. 7500 miles the first year and have spent over two months staying in it.

It would be boring if nothing went wrong or there were no projects.

Trailer - at dealer getting a new side under warranty
House - new kitchen floor, counters, install new washer and dryer
Boat - strip diesel engine down to replace blown head gasket and service fuel injection system - finished today
Lawn tractor - service grease sharpen and balance blades.

That's how the last 2 weeks went.

I was parked one day in a nice quiet seaside state park and there was a motorcycle rally nearby. I bunch of bikers were camped at the other end of the park. One guy walks down to our site and politely asks if I had a certain size allen wrench. Sure, I said, but what made you think I'd have it. He informed me that most MH owners had a complete set of repair tools & parts.
How right he was!

We lived on a boat for a couple of years and something always went wrong with it when we went somewhere. Not really different with a MH except it seems easier and faster to get mobile service if you need it.This summer we made a 3000 mile trip across the US. Everything was fine until we pulled in to a State Park in Illinois.
Fiest park we didint have a water hookup.....then I found out the fresh water pump was dead....bathhouse close so it worked till the next am.....nice place so we stayed an extra day and I replaced the pump....we find ways to concur issues and don't stress anymore....had plenty of years where we did that!

Yep, it's a lot like owning a boat. Repairing and maintaining demand constant attention. But, then, it's a lot more fun than working on a house, isn't it?

I always said that if you own a motorhome you need to have a lot of money or be handy at fixing things!;)
