Took my direct tv dish on the road and of course I can't my local channels. I don't want to buy more equipment. Is there a way to get around this or get the major channels somehow else. Thanks, Dave

I must have got lucky. We had SWM DirecTv installed in our 5er in Arizona a couple years ago. When we travel back to Michigan, I call direct and have our service address changed, We get the locals. I've also changed the service address in other states when the wife needed to watch her reality tv shows. Plan included free local channels.

We have locals and DNS and can change the locals in a similar manner. However, regardless of what city's channels the locals are set to, the DVR is programmed to use the DNS channels. That way nothing changes when we move to a new city and most of the time I don't bother to switch the locals unless we are staying in one area for a couple of months. It's not as if there is anything particularly interesting in watching local news in an unfamiliar city and you can get better weather forecasts online IMO.

When you say, "the DVR is programmed to use the DNS channels", is that a function of the box or do you just make sure to schedule DNS slots?

I only set the DVR to record from the DNS channels or HBO/Showtime/AMC, etc that always stay the same. There's rarely a show on a local channel that I can't get on DNS.

Darn. DW does not grasp that concept but I'm trying.

The best thing to do is get a Genie; with 5 separate tuners you can record the DNS feeds and watch the same show on a local channel if you like getting local commercials. Low-budget local commercials can be entertaining, sometimes more so than the shows they're inserted in. :W

I get the local channels and I do not pay any extra. I used to have Dish and had to call them for the local channels, not with Direct.

Just a reminder that if you don't have Locals at your present location but do have OTA signals you can add an AM21 and receive OTA programming, record it and play it back on your DTV DVR, USB plug 'n play that becomes part of your system.

I have the same situation, but from what I've been told we're not supposed to have both.

I too have DNS and LOCALS. Tried to cancel the LOCALS but told you can't. They are part of your package and not separately sold. Decided not to rock the boat and gave up.

That's why I don't bother with locals at all. I watch most of my TV after it's recorded anyway to avoid most of the commercials so when and where the Networks come from make no difference.
If I want to watch local Network it would only be for the news/weather (I do find some of the local color interesting) and I can do that with the OTA antenna.
What I post is my 2 cents and nothing more. Please don't read anything into my post that's not there. If you disagree, that's OK.

2oldman, your service is grandfathered and you can receive E and W. New subscribers are assigned E OR W based upon the service address.
I have never known the Networks to be available separately as described above ($3.50 each) but rather as a package which includes the 4 major Networks, CW and PBS.

What does your service address have to do with DNS? My LA and NY services are $20.

Thanks to everyone for their replies. I did change my address with direct tv, now I get no local channels at all. Will have to call them and change to an rv account with dns, Dave

What kind of antenna are you using?

Since I use DTV at home and in the RV, I just suppliment campground cable or OTA for local channels and get the rest off DTV. It is a lot easier then trying to change it or paying extra for it when I am on the road.
