Has anyone began the conversion to 10? Problems, comments? Do you know if it loads on top of say, 7, or replaces all of the older version?

Thanks,

Jim

Did the conversion to 10 overnight.. This Am I fired up Firefox and can not see any difference in how it is working (might be a bit faster).

I am told there is no ad block for the EDGE browser that replaced MSIE, but I have not yet used Edge and only use it for ad-heavy sites anyway (where you get paid for viewing the ads so you do not wish to block 'em)

Or for sites without advertising.

Just installed win 10.

Played / looked around for hours and have zero issues with it.

I am happy. Sofar

4 more pc's to go.

I am not concerned about the OS taking control of all updates as log as they don't crash. I don't know a person that understands the internal changes of hundreds of patches a year to an OS. I (like 99%) just throw them in and hope for the best. OR hand-dracally click one at a time and reboot to test yourself (times hundreds of patches times 5 pc's + 2 android phones + 2 tablets). Ain't happening. I trust the OS maintenance crews.

Happy camper so far.

I just "love" it when I'm helping somebody with a win 7 or win 8 laptop, and we decide I'll just take it home to work on it. Try to shut it down, and get "Do not turn off your computer - Installing update 1 of 101".

I just finished the W10 update.
I checked the flag notification at 6:25 PM and it said is was ready.
I clicked OK.
At 8:00 PM I told it to use the defaults, as they can be changed later.
At 8:10 all was done.

Same background and all setting the same as in W7. Just as I left them.

This was on an older Acer with W7 and 4 gb ram.
I expect the wife's laptop to go quicker as it is W8 with 8 gb ram.

Even my older Office 97 programs work and they all seem faster opening.
I did not have to do anything.

Never said XP is more "secure" but BLINDLY installing each and every update CAN expose your OS to a BAD update..

MS has had quite a few very recent blunders for Win7 AND Win8, while for the most part updates tend to be "harmless" in nature, there are many good reasons as to why you DON'T really want to be the first guinea pig for the updates..

Many large companies actually run their OWN "Windows Update Server", why? Well they DON'T TRUST MS Updates and will run MANY tests in VMs to ensure the updates don't foul up the PCs they maintain..

Only once the updates have been tested and found to be necessary AND harmless they will copy the updates to their server and push the update to the PCs..

A former coworker of mine actually has worked for a few companies in the IT departments testing updates and approving the release of them..

I personally like to hold off the updates for a week and monitor the chat forums for complaints.. Saved me from downloading that stupid Win10 nag on my Win7 PC.. and before that a Font corruption issue with a update.. to name a couple of recent blunders..

Win10 HOME you won't have a choice, Win10 "Pro" you can only temporarily DELAY the automatic download and install..

I like to think of it as an INFORMED consumer instead of a paranoid uninformed user that accepts all updates so it makes them feel safe, secure from all those nasty s waiting to turn their PC into a mindless robot..

Just because you have all the latest patches it doesn't make your PC any "safer".. I HAVE seen PCs which were fully up to date with all patches FAIL as fast as one that was not patched..

Better security really starts right at your browser level, if you are running IE or any other browser barefoot you WILL at some point and time get hit with malware. I used to drink the koolaid of patches and ran IE..

I found that out the hard way, now I run FireFox with AdBlock Plus PLUS NoScript.. Makes it one heck of a lot harder for a drive by malware hit if it can't run JavaScripts..

XP is looking better every day..

Really ? I would not touch that 14 year old OS with a 10 ft pole IMHO.

So.. I take it that you are OK with MS randomly downloading AND installing Adware, bloatware and perhaps if you are lucky an update that does not brick your PC?

The recent โ€œWin10 nag updatesโ€ that MS dumped onto MILLIONS of Win7 and Win8 PCs disguised as โ€œupdatesโ€ should be a very loud and clear warning that MS HAS the potential to overstep some boundaries with forced updates.

With this change MS NOW has a very captive โ€œaudienceโ€ which has the possibility of being ABUSED. Imagine how much money MS could generate in โ€œadโ€ revenue if they sold the update process as a revolving paid ad โ€œserviceโ€ That YOU CANNOT REFUSE??? They COULD do this and you would get to enjoy every day getting ad nags from toothpaste, diapers, to feminine products, to meds or even your favorite โ€œedโ€ med..

This forced update also VIOLATES a very important principle of โ€œsecurityโ€ which is to NOT ALLOW REMOTE ACCESS to your PC. All it would take is for MS update channel to be spoofed or corrupted and the whole house of cards will come crashing down.

You now have a greater chance of getting unwanted stuff than if you used XP or any of the older OSโ€™s!

Just because a OS is โ€œ14 yrs oldโ€ does not mean that it cannot SAFELY function, there are tens of thousands of embedded DOS, 95,98,2000,Vista and yes XP systems STILL in use today quietly performing the task they were setup for and some in life or death situations WHILE BEING CONNECTED TO SERVERS AND THE INTERENET.

Imagine some day when you have a pacemaker and the tech is accessing your pacemaker with a Win10 PC to check and make changes to the program to YOUR life support and the PC suddenly shuts down and reboots due to a forced update corrupting YOUR pacemaker.. Not a far-fetched scenario, pacemakers ARE remotely checked and reprogrammed.

A real life scenerio.. We had hired a new employee, shortly after he was hired he started to be noticably late every week.

After a few months of excuses of the alarm not waking him up I mentioned that perhaps he should buy a new alarm.. I asked what he was using..

wait for it..

HIS WINDOWS PHONE!

What we determined was his Windows phone would reboot during the night after getting updates. When that happend it TURNED OFF HIS ALARM!

My concern is not the one time W10 download which I can control, instead it's the unrestricted W10 update downloads that will occur for the life of W10.

There are also posts suggesting MS may make W10 available on a flash drive and that is another step in the right direction.

To each his own, I've got 3 XP systems, and like a good '57 Chevy I'm keeping them. Enjoy all of those government and corporate backdoors in Win 10, along with the updates you're not allowed to refuse. Does anybody wonder why it's not only free, but that Microsoft is aggressively pushing everybody to take it?

"The software periodically checks for system and app updates, and downloads and installs them for you. ... By accepting this agreement, you agree to receive these types of automatic updates without any additional notice."

Want to know what data Win 10 collects? The License Agreement says to look in the Privacy Statement, which says to click a link to the Win 10 product page to find out, and I couldn't find a darn thing about it there.

same here. I'm happy to sit it out and see what develops. two of my buddies are eager to be pathfinders and it'll be interesting to see what they find.
