Apollo Diesel generators

Hello,

I am thinking of getting a portable diesel generator to place on our luggage rack (Hevy duty) behind our Class C to power the electric and AC while driving. Has anyone heard of Apollo generators? More specifically the AED6500SR? It is rated at 6.3KW Single Phase. I can buy a new one for about $650

Thank you

It uses a Yanmar air cooled diesel clone engine. Nice design but build quality of these is highly variable.

It runs at 3600 RPM fixed.

I had a Kipor clone version for a while-didn't use for camping. A friend has it now and it still runs fine. But there are issues for camping: It is big booming loud. Not annoying sound to me, but too loud for campground service. As mentioned they are heavy. The ones that don't have catalyst have very stinky exhaust. Burned diesel fuel never smelled so bad as it does in these small engines. Sort of like campfire smoke following you but worse.

If for camping near others, rule it out due to noise.

The beauty of a diesel is that they run slower and the fuel doesn't explode in the combustion chamber. It more or less burns rapidly. The engine itself is quieter but the added noise from the injector will add noise. Longlivity, diesel convenice , lighter weight, little quieter, price of fuel= go gas

So he will NEVER use it when parked for a nap or a campground that does not have power. He made a statement that 69 to 74 DB's was not that loud I simply disagree.

Thanks for all the input folks. I guess my idea behind the diesel was that I would get more hrs per gallon of fuel and longevity of the generator itself. It would be used mostly for on the road electric since most places we would stay at would have full hookups. We were out West 2 summers ago and the regular AC was not enough to cool the entire RV, pretty grumpy kids. Thanks

At 379 pounds it would not walk off. 69 to 74 DB is loud.

One Honda will not handle his A/C and two would be a waste of money and space IMO. I would advise a Champion, less money, less space taken up and still a weight that is manageable.
Sorry I put up the wrong picture. Here is the Champion INFO.Clicky

Why diesel ? thats why it is so heavy, and now you have to carry another fuel. I would not buy it, save your money and go for a honda or yamaha you will be much happier and only have to buy one time.

Keep in mind Apollo is a China made product. The name Apollo has no meaning other than a tag on a machine. Parts and service maybe impossible to obtain and quality is a question mark.

Thanks for your responses. According to the online manual http://www.apolloindustrial.com/upfile/AED6500SR%20Manual this is the Noise level dBA/7m (zero load?full load) 69-74
Not terrible. The weight is an issue though.

It is on wheels, so you might be able to get it on your luggage rack... but it may be nearing load capacities, especially with most hitches having a 500 pound tongue weight at most... and 379 pounds may be empty, so factor another 100 pounds for the fuel.

With no noise level specs, so I'm guessing this thing is going to be extremely loud... loud enough that even the owner may not be able to sleep with it on, much less anyone in a half mile radius.

Only way I could see using it is if I put it on a cargo trailer, then either dug a pit so the generator is halfway in or sandbagged it. Both are good enough for US servicemen with their diesels. However, not many places allow that to be done.

No mention of noise level that I could see and a weight of 379 pounds makes me say no way
