? Awning on Slide Question

Past weekend saw a Class A with awnings on the 2 passenger side slides, not over the doors. Never seen that before and don't know why they're there. I've seen that before with an outdoor grill built into the slide, but this bus had just the slides, nothing built into them for outside use. I assume rear slide was for the bed (maybe 6' wide), front slide was a good 10-12' wide. Any ideas?

(Edit) After reviewing replies see that I should've mentioned I wasn't referring to topper awnings, the bus had them, too.
Never thought about shading the sides. I wonder if that's really effective. I think it's an option I can continue to live without.

I see a lot of them that were very poorly installed. They sag, they have insufficient slope and not enough tension.
If they are installed correctly they really dont have any serious drawback.
We installed one because it keeps debris off the slide roof (we camp under the trees a lot) and keeps it from getting jammed into the seal when the slide is retracted. We also wanted a topper to alleviate the heat that used to come through the slides thin roof when parked in the sun.
It has worked out great and I would do it again.

Some of the higher end motorhomes will have awnings on both sides of the RV. Like all awnings they provide shade to help keep the sun away from the sides and slideouts.

To flap in the wind creating lots of irritating noise
To make it difficult to clean debris off slide roof when wind blows it under topper
