Black Tank Fills Quickly......

There are usually 3 or 4 of us when we go camping. On a 7 day trip we will usually have to dump the black 1/2 way through the trip because it's near the bottom of the bowl. When we are leaving after 7 days the tank is almost full again but I'll step on the pedal to get some more water in the tank before dumping.

Now here's my issue. We'll dump the black when we are packing up to go home and then run the black water flush line for a few minutes with the black valve open. This gets a lot the **** out. Then we'll close the black and shut the flush off. We really like to clean our tanks so we'll have someone stand on the toilet pedal for a few minutes to fill the black up with fresh water again. Filling up the tank this way takes FOREVER! I can't believe how long it takes, 10-15 minutes of standing on the foot pedal to get the black filled up again.

Why does it take so long to fill up this way when it only takes 3 days to fill the tank up under normal use? Yes, I understand that more than just water is going down under normal use but the numbers just don't add up. Does anyone else experience this?

If you really want to test. Use five gallon buckets and see how many it takes to fill tank. Filling from flush pedal you really don't know the quantity of water you're putting into tank. If it is a 22 gallon tank it should take 4+ buckets to fill.

Yuck. That must be a joke.

Not me, because I don't need to fill the bt with water when there's already a flush line there.

I use one of these to flush my black tank:

It works great.

When you go through this routine, use a hose or a 5 gallon plastic bucket to pour down the toilet. There's not much in terms of volume when trying to fill with the toilet pedal valve. Also 10-15 minutes of standing on the pedal is making your water pump work extra hard. Just my opinion....

Wait! I'm confused :? Your title indicates the black tank fills too quickly....but your question is why does it take so long to fill?

With several people using it over a 7 day period, you really are not tracking how long the water in the bowl is really running, unless you stand there with a stop watch and time it every time it's flushed. With several people using it, different times of the day, you are not always aware of them using it. You are aware of the time you use it. So, slowly over a week it fills up. Little bits of time over a long time, add it all up....

Now, you fill the tank all at once. You stand there in one session. Yes, it seems like a lot. You know what? It is. It's just over the 7 days, you really don't see it

I didn't know the size of your tank but I see fro other post 20 gallons maybe.uite
that is way small.
It is quite possible you could change out the tank fro a larger one, not knowing the construction of your RV.
If you do might as well add a flush system to it and gray tank at the same time.
Cost...well nothign is cheap any more except me.

When flushing try closing the dump valve while keeping the flush going for about 30 seconds then open the dump valve. Do this several times. If you have a clear fitting on the end of the dump valve you can see what comes out the second or third time you do this. This avoids standing on the foot pedal as you described.

TO get the black tank clean try the following:
- dump the black tank as ususal
- close the valve and pour 5 gallons of water down the toilet - all some detergent
- drive round the campground and swish the water around for a few minutes
- dump again

Been doing this for years and keeps the tank clean;

I also pour a couple of gallons of water down the toilet before leaving home.

Is it the Jayco X17Z in your profile? If so, it only has a 22 gal. tank which is kinda small compared to the average of something like 30+ gal and you're just asking too much out of it.

Sounds like you might be getting it clean enough but there are some things that will help. Not sure what you mean by "flush line". If you haven't got one, get a clear "backflush" elbow and you can blast water back into the tank and clean more stuff out. To speed filling the tank up a bit, in addition to using the pedal see if your shower head will reach over to the toilet. I do that sometimes and you can unscrew the head for a bit more flow. Your water flow is likely around 1-2 gpm at the toilet so you're looking at 11-22 minutes to fill it right up and there's not much you can do. A wand down the toilet might help or better, add an in-tank flusher on the side of the tank.

Try adding 2-3 gallons of water each time before using the tank after a dump/clean. Tanks are generally rather shallow and depth to tank bottom can vary between makes & models. If you don't get some water in to start and along with some water each time you flush, you can build up the infamous "pyramid of poo". Without enough water, it's not gonna flatten out at all and will rise up and restrict the pipe into the tank. A shallower tank will make this happen faster. Never skimp on water in an effort to make the tank last longer.
