Brake systems for dinghy

I currently don't have brakes on our toad Chevy Sonic (2700 lbs) but I will be replacing it, possibly with a Ford Focus (3000 lbs) and will want a braking system. I want the least troublesome, least intrusive and one I don't have to put anything on and off when going from towing to not towing. You get the idea. I won't say price is irrelevant but it's not the main factor. Opinions appreciated.

Blue Ox Auto Stop can also be purchased independent of the tow bar in the event one already has the tow bar. And if you live in IL and want a factory install of a base place and the auto stop cable to the brake pedal, BO in Pender, NB is not that far away. Great free campground for you as well.

X??? on NSA! About 15k miles using it - very dependable, less weight, no "box" to store, less $$$ (!). Simple, easy, effective! ST

NSA ReadyBrute Elite. Worse part of installing the brake cable was getting under the car.

If I ever buy a braking system for a towed motor vehicle, that is what I will get, there is no doubt in my military mind!

Since the OP already has a toad, I'm assuming he already has a tow bar. If that's the case, then getting a Readybrute Elite probably wouldn't be wise unless the tow bar is old and needs replacing.....then, I too, would go with the Readybrute.

NSA makes both a standalone ReadyBrake brake only unit and the combination ReadyBrute Elite tow bar and brake unit.

If he is going to keep his current tow bar, then I think I would go with the Roadmaster Invisabrake mentioned above. Once installed there is absolutely nothing to connect/disconnect....very similar to my US Gear Unified brake system.

I use the Roadmaster invisibrake. All parts are hidden. Check the different features of all these popular types to make a decision.

We have the SMI kit on our towed hyundai. Works well and is unobtrusive. Controller is under hood on off switch on drivers kick panel. Just bought another from a friend for my ranger which we plan to tow when we need to take the grandkids fishing so we can load a boat on it. its a roadmaster invisbrake should be much like the smi unit. the hyundai is less than 3000lb, the ranger as it sits is about 4000.
