That silver colored connector shaped like a U, has a threaded bolt that goes through both ends. They are actually quite strong. (I really don't see what the problem is with using this this? :B )
I been using one one for my blue tote for over 10 years now. I have no problems with it towing my tote. That connector is probably JUST as strong as those rusty chains. I really don't see what the problem is? :W :E

I've always used crossed safety chains when pulling a trailer, except if I was going to pull with a motorcycle. Which I've always felt was a bit sketchy anyway.
