Cicadas invasion

I just saw this article about the Cicada Invasion.

They are expected to be out in force next month and a half. As many as 1.5 million per acre.
'We are trying to plan a trip for June till July 4th in the Shanandoah Valley when we read this article. YIKES. :E

Will this (or should this) change yours or our plans? Anyone camped in this before?

Now that is a real summer sound. Love hearing them. As others have said they are harmless.

The biggest problem for me is taking walks. In some areas, where the ground hasn't been disturbed in years (like state parks) they can be so thick you can't walk around them. I remember living in an older neighborhood in DC during one huge swarm where the crunch of cicadas under tires was louder than the car's engine. In the evening, their buzz was louder than the neighbor's lawn mower.

I may be weird but I've always loved the sound of these things. Reminds me of my childhood.

Would catch them and think the vibrations they made were so neat.

The last time we were supposed to have a cicada "invasion" here in Connecticut it was a flop. I am not sure if even one hatched in my town. My understanding is these invasions are usually very localized.

About three years ago we had them in Missouri. Not too many but a couple in Columbia Mo made ice cream with Cicadas in it. They sold alot. Some say it was good. Finally the health dept made them stop. True story. Look it up on Google.

Nature happens when you go camping. If you don't want nature, don't go camping.

There is no cause for alarm whatever. They do not bite or sting, they are just big and noisy. And yes, bazillions per acre. The birds love 'em, as do many other species. Rich source of protein. Edible by humans, too, if you're of a mind. So go, camp, enjoy the great outdoors.

Ugly buggers and noisy too.
They wreaked havoc on my peach trees when I lived in S. Illinois.
Ovipositors cut into branch twigs to deposit eggs. Once the fruit starts to grow the increased weight snapped a lot of branches that were weakened by the incision.

I remember the last CICADA invasion here - Wasn't all that bad but did find many here coming out of the ground in places...

Hard to believe that has been 17 years already
