Do we really need skylights in the shower?

Last night I was taking a shower and looked up at the skylight and wondered to myself, do we really need this thing? I mean it's only practical during the daylight hours, it's a big penetration in the roof that's prone to leaks and weakens the roof, and it lets in a huge amount of heat on sunny days.

So my question to you is this. If the manufacturer offered you the choice would you rather:
  1. Take the skylight as standard equipment
  2. Skip the skylight and opt for $150 cash in your pocket
  3. Skip the skylight and take a 150 watt solar panel in that spot for no extra cost.

I am 6'1" and find the extra room to wash my hair beneficial. I can't remember if it is clear or opaque. If someone gets their jollies gawking at my wrinkled, overweight, battle scarred 62 year old body in the shower through a distorted skylight using binoculars, go ahead.
I am NOT a mechanic although I do play one in my garage!

Do we really need skylights in the shower?

For me their about as useless as a hole in the roof. Cold in the winter when temps dip to single digit and hot in the summer when temps hit 100-110 degrees. I always put 2-3 coats of white elastomeric coating over them.
We buy used campers so I have no choice if the unit has one. But when a rich uncle dies and I can afford to buy new camper "it will not have a skylite".

I'll take #2 please.

I'm only 5'10 and I wish my second trailer had one in the shower. My head just barley touched the ceiling. I believe they are only needed in shorter (height) trailers.

I use the clear one in our camper for a periscope. I can stand up on my toes and get a 360 degree view of the campsite.

If that is what you are using your shower area for you had better google the proper use of the shower.

Lighten up Doug, it was meant as a joke!

When we purchased our new fifth wheel I inquired about ordering it without the skylight. Forest River said no problem, it would cost me $500 to have the roof reengineered to have it deleted. Needless to say my fifth wheel has a sky light over the shower, I'm too cheap.

I for one would opt out of shower skylight IF I could stand in the shower without one. I would also opt out of all roof vents other than one in the bath.

Since my ceiling is curved and high, I do not have a skylight in my rig. The bathroom vent and fan is in the shower area. The main reason for it is height since you have to step up into the shower or bathtub, they put the skylight to give the same Clarence as the rest of the rig. The tub is usually 2-3 inches higher than the floor.
