If you ever need to open it to fix a broken latch rod you will be glad they did.Seen a few that have the whole inside of tailgate sprayed as one,and it takes a chisel to get it out,and even more work getting the screws out.
When they did mine,they covered the hole with plastic,which was still there when I had to repair the plastic clip for the latch rod.
