Dump station fools

Seems like there was a thread about the same general thing recently, but I can't find it so I'll start over.

Today at the dump station, a couple are on the other side of us, dumping their small TT. There is no potable water there. There is a hose on a vertical arm with a reel of hose at the top, so you can pull it out and into your RV if you want. And there is a regular hose spigot facing each lane. With a big sign saying DO NOT DRINK THIS WATER.

So anyway, he finishes dumping. After a minute, I notice he has a nice new looking white drinking water hose out. He proceeds to attach it to the spigot and the wife takes it into the TT to put it in the toilet (I am assuming). I was so stunned that I didn't keep enough wits about me to consider telling them what they were doing wrong. I normally would try to keep my advice to myself, but really, they needed someone to speak up.

I had stuff to do, and people were waiting. When I finished, she came out with the hose and said, "all the lights are still on", which I took to mean they were worrying about the tank level indicators. At that point, we left. I wish I would have said something. I might have gotten chewed out for it, but it would have rolled off my back pretty soon.

My DW says maybe they had a separate hose just for that. Um, I am betting not. Oh well.

I have a white hose that stays in the camper. Its sole purpose is to hook up to the black tank flush system on the side of the trailer. For filling my fresh tank we have those green expancable hoses, and NO we dont drink the water in the camper. Just dishes and toilet.

I agree. I once had a friend who would NOT drink the water in the bathroom.

I have a WHITE hose for potable water. and a GREEN hose for other items such as washing the trailer.

The above is probably very typical of the vast majority of RVers. Lets face it.....we all like to brag a bit about our accumulated knowledge in the fine are of RV 101. But its only good sense to wait to be asked....volunteering information can usually be met with someone digging in their heels and sometimes a not so pleasant "go to hell, I know what I'm doing". Especially if there is a wife present bending the other ear with I told you so's....
Seems like the more stupid the activity, the more we have to keep our mouths shut 🙂 Gotta be somekind of rule about that.

Being nice, patient and not condescending flattened the learning curve and I made a new friend. Hope to see him again down the road. IMHO: Not many things in RV'n that are simpler than the proper use of a dump station but nobody is born with that knowledge any more than they are born with the ability to back a trailer. To the new folks out there observe and don't be embarrassed to ask. To those who are asked, be nice and share your knowledge/experience and we all win. :C

Even bomb makers are required to use the correct color wires... Always gives me a laugh when on TV, someone tells the person over the phone 'What color wires do you see? OK.. Cut the blue wire' ... LOL

Hoses are one thing. So far, my worst scare was when I was using a macerator pump to empty my tanks into a semi-buried 250 gallon external dump tank (which was occasionally emptied by a honey wagon.) Someone walks up, and nearly pulled the other end of the hose out to take a drink before I ran them off.

Just because I don't want to take chances, I have my white hoses in a bin for fresh water use. My rinse hose for the macerator pump as well as the hose for the output from the macerator pump to the sewer drain are oversized black rubber hoses with "NOT FOR POTABLE USE - DO NOT DRINK" stamped in block lettering on them. Oh, I use gloves and after the gloves are put away, I use gel alcohol on the hands. Shoes and such stay on an entrance mat (since I don't want to grind sand into the RV's flooring.)
