extended warranty plans

Called my dealer and wanted to take advantage of an extended service plan, Cornerstone, they offered at date of purchase last year. To my surprise he said that there was a rate increase in April of 40%.
So now looking for a plan.
Any suggestions?

We have had extended warranties on every vehicle purchased over the last 20 years. We've used them extensively, and have NEVER had an issue. When the RV extended warranty was represented to us to have the same "bumper to bumper" coverage, we believed the salesman. Our RV was bought from a VERY SMALL dealership in Norman, OK. The kind of place that relies on word-of-mouth and reputation. So we blindly believed them, and purchased the warranty. Now we know better...

I bought the Good Sam ESP and it has paid for itself in the first year. I am glad I bought it as it has helped me with some peace of mind on the unit.

They always say that the rate will go up and better to sign up now. Do you think they are going to say anything else to a potential buyer? These are the single biggest profit item for any business.

I only get the extension for items that have a track record of breaking in less than 3 years and where the cost of the parts and service is going to be more than simply replacing the item.

These things are NOT warranties. Only the Original Equipment Manufacture (OEM) can offer a warranty. These are service plans. The difference will become clear if you have to go to court. They are generally full of loopholes because after all claims paid = profits down, claims denied = profits up. Read the fine print very carefully what the big bold print promises the small print takes away. A very common loophole is to say that part is not covered if its failure is caused by a non covered part. Then in the fine print it will say that gaskets are not covered. Water pump goes out, sorry not covered because it must have been a gasket even if the mechanic says it was a broken shaft (this happened to a friend. Because all you have is a service contract your only recourse is take them to court. One last thing is to check with your local dealership or mechanic to see if they will deal with the company you chose. Many won't because they have been burnt too many times.

My only comment is stay away from these plans. Based on personal experience I suggest this. I could explain but it would take a long explanation and I don't want to take more space than I should.

Seeing the discussion on extended warranties, I wondered if there has been any kind of research done comparing the various plans on the market. Service warranties, road warranties, extended warranties? Found little in Consumers Reports. Would like a side by side comparison. Mine is due for renewal in October and would like to see what's available even though I am very satisfied with what I currently have. Thanks.

What problems with your trailer are you having that they won't pay for? Do they have an arbitration process?

It has page after page of stuff that is not covered, which means they are denying our claims. I will never again by an RV extended warranty. If we'd kept that $3900 in the bank, we wouldn't be frustrated and ticked off and out the money right now. We'd just go fix it ourselves. Which is what we are having to do, while XtraRide keeps our money.

Not to adverstise for the sponsor of the forum, but I think the Good Sam ESP offers decent value, what is covered and term of use, vs. cost. It is specific, potentialy expensive, items, not wall to wall. But wall to wall plans I've looked at, have usually had tricky exclusions. Choosing to self insure.

I have always had good luck with Good Sam Extended Service Plan and their Roadside Assistance programs. They have always done what they say and the service has benn excellent.

since the OP bought the rv last year, I assume that they will be either paying cash or making a new small loan. I took an extended warranty on my Highlander to extend the coverage to 7 yrs 84,000 mi. mainly because of all of the complex electronics. they just paid $1741 on my lift gate repair.
